Teen driver arrested after Nevada crash kills five family members

Nevada Highway Patrol / AP

Jean Soriano, 18, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in a southern Nevada crash that killed five members of a California family and injured the suspect and three other people.

?

By Martin Griffith, The Associated Press

Five members of a Southern California family were killed in southern Nevada when their van was rear-ended by an 18-year-old driver who was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.

The five dead were among seven family members who were in the van, authorities said. The other two ? the 40-year-old female driver and a 15-year-old boy ? were hospitalized in critical condition.

The van was carrying a couple, their children and some aunts and uncles, he said. Killed were three men in their 40s, a teenage female and an adult female.???

Jean Soriano of California was booked into the Clark County Detention Center after he was treated and released at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said.

The crash happened at about 3 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 15 near the Utah line. Soriano's sport utility vehicle struck the van from behind, causing both vehicles to spin out of control and roll near Mesquite, some 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, investigators said.

A 23-year-old passenger in Soriano's SUV was treated at the hospital and released.

Authorities believe Soriano was returning from a visit with family in Utah to his home in California at the time of the wreck, Hixson said. They didn't immediately release his hometown or the names or hometowns of the victims.

Beer bottles were found in the SUV, Hixson said, and troopers performed a blood-alcohol test on Soriano at the hospital. The results won't be known for a couple of weeks, he said.

Hixson said only two of the seven people in the van were wearing seat belts. The five who were not buckled in were ejected, but one survived.

"Unfortunately, so many in the van weren't wearing seat belts, and some might have survived had they been wearing them," Hixson said. "We see it so many times where people can survive simply by having a seat belt on."

Japan just might be set to open a new chapter

By Alan Wheatley, Global Economics Correspondent

LONDON (Reuters) - ?Historic' is an overused word. But if the Bank of Japan meets expectations and embarks this week on a radical policy shift to crush deflation, the meeting will go down as, well, historic.

Because of gently falling prices, Japan has not grown in nominal terms for two decades, reducing its relevance for the global economy.

But all that could change if the BOJ's new governor, Haruhiko Kuroda, shows he is indeed serious about hitting the central bank's new inflation target of 2 percent.

"This is their best shot at reviving the economy," said Jerry Webman, chief economist at OppenheimerFunds in New York. "Even a modest improvement in the world's third-largest economy is going to add ... to overall global growth."

At a two-day rate review that ends on Thursday, the central bank is likely to start open-ended asset purchases immediately, rather than from 2014. The BOJ will also probably extend the maturity of the bonds it buys and set a new policy target focusing on the size of its balance sheet, sources familiar with the bank's thinking told Reuters in Tokyo.

Japan badly needs nominal gross domestic product to start expanding again so that the government's debt does not become unbearably large as a share of GDP. It is already dizzyingly high at 235 percent of annual output.

Rising prices also transmit signals about which sectors can most profitably deploy capital and labor. When deflation is entrenched, those market messages are muffled; stagnation sets in, as it has in Japan.

Despite the strong political mandate from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, many doubt Kuroda will succeed in reflating the economy without more fundamental reforms such as injecting more competition into the economy and attracting more direct foreign investors - something Japan has shown little appetite for.

Even if his strategy does work, there could be a backlash from Japan's growing legions of pensioners, who have no interest in seeing their wealth and fixed incomes eroded by inflation.

All told, the stakes for Japan are arguably greater than at any point in the last fifty years, according to James Malcolm, a foreign-exchange strategist with Deutsche Bank in London.

He said those expecting to be disappointed by Kuroda's debut are themselves likely to be disappointed given the single-minded resolution to defeat inflation that Abe has shown since taking office in December.

"This is a product of the increasingly widely recognized failure of every other economic policy approach, presenting an opportunity that Abe has grabbed with both hands," Malcolm, a long-time Japan watcher, told clients.

DRAGHI IN THE SPOTLIGHT

While Kuroda has Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's template for quantitative easing to follow, the BOJ chief's commitment to end deflation ?at any cost' has echoes of European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's vow to ?do whatever it takes' to preserve the euro.

The single currency has had another near-death experience over the terms of a rescue for Cyprus, and Draghi is sure to be quizzed about the deal's implications for the euro zone at a news conference following an ECB policy meeting on Thursday.

In exchange for a bailout loan, the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission and the ECB wiped out Cyprus's senior bond holders and imposed a levy on big depositors at the island's two largest banks. Temporary capital controls are also in place.

These unprecedented steps could yet prove contagious, touching off a deposit flight from weak banks in more important economies that could cause the euro zone to disintegrate, pessimists fear.

Optimists retort that the ECB has slung a safety net under the euro by promising to buy struggling governments' bonds as a last resort.

Where both camps agree is that Cyprus's crisis will deal a fresh blow to confidence and further delay the euro zone's recovery.

"Even without some sort of break-up or fragmentation, the economic outlook for the region is very poor given the fundamentals," said Jonathan Loynes with Capital Economics, a London research outfit.

EURO ZONE, U.S. JOBS DATA

The ECB is unlikely to deliver fresh monetary stimulus, according to economists, even though figures on Tuesday are expected to show that unemployment in the 17 countries sharing the euro rose to a record 12 percent in February. In Spain and Greece it has surged to around 25 percent.

Relief is unlikely any time soon, according to the International Confederation of Private Employment Agencies in Brussels, which represents 140,000 private firms around the world. Demand for agency jobs fluctuates roughly in time with changes in GDP and is a leading labor market indicator.

Denis Pennel, managing director of the group, said his members had lately been reporting weakness in Europe, with the biggest drop in demand in Italy and France. "We don't expect any recovery before the last quarter of this year at the earliest," he said.

Nor was business at job agencies in Japan looking up. "If you want to have signs of optimism, you should really look to the U.S.," Pennel said. The confederation's American members reported a 2.4 percent year-on-year rise in demand in March.

The Institute of Supply Management's manufacturing survey and non-farm payroll figures, both for March, are the conventional U.S. data highlights of the week. Employers are likely to have added 200,000 jobs, down from an unexpectedly large 236,000 increase in February, according to economists polled by Reuters.

Webman with OppenheimerFunds acknowledged that there had been some recent softness in the economic news flow but drew comfort from evidence, notably in the fourth-quarter GDP report, that U.S. firms are starting to invest some of their huge cash holdings.

"The economy is growing decently, but it's not really accelerating to any marked degree," he concluded.

In his Easter Vigil homily at St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Francis kept his message simple and tied to the liturgical readings. "Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome him as a friend, with trust: he is life!" Just a few hours after the vigil ends, Francis on Sunday will celebrate his first Easter Mass as pontiff and deliver his "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "To the city and the world."

Here are scenes from Easter celebrations at the Vatican and across the world.

Artificial spleen to treat bloodstream infections: Sepsis therapeutic device under development

Mar. 30, 2013 ? The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University announced today that it was awarded a $9.25 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to further advance a blood-cleansing technology developed at the Institute with prior DARPA support, and help accelerate its translation to humans as a new type of sepsis therapy.

The device will be used to treat bloodstream infections that are the leading cause of death in critically ill patients and soldiers injured in combat.

To rapidly cleanse the blood of pathogens, the patient's blood is mixed with magnetic nanobeads coated with a genetically engineered version of a human blood 'opsonin' protein that binds to a wide variety of bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and toxins. It is then flowed through microchannels in the device where magnetic forces pull out the bead-bound pathogens without removing human blood cells, proteins, fluids, or electrolytes -- much like a human spleen does. The cleansed blood then flows back to the patient.

"In just a few years we have been able to develop a suite of new technologies, and to integrate them to create a powerful new device that could potentially transform the way we treat sepsis," said Wyss founding director and project leader, Don Ingber, M.D., Ph.D. "The continued support from DARPA enables us to advance our device manufacturing capabilities and to obtain validation in large animal models, which is precisely what is required to enable this technology to be moved towards testing in humans."

The team will work to develop manufacturing and integration strategies for its core pathogen-binding opsonin and Spleen-on-a-Chip fluidic separation technologies, as well as a novel coating technology called "SLIPS," which is a super-hydrophobic coating inspired from the slippery surface of a pitcher plant that repels nearly any material it contacts. By coating the inner surface of the channels of the device with SLIPS, blood cleansing can be carried out without the need for anticoagulants to prevent blood clotting.

In addition to Ingber, the multidisciplinary team behind this effort includes Wyss core faculty and Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Science faculty member Joanna Aizenberg, Ph.D., who developed the SLIPS technology; Wyss senior staff member Michael Super, Ph.D., who engineered the human opsonin protein; and Mark Puder, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School who will be assisting with animal studies.

The BabbaBox from BabbaCo at Barefoot Books | Toy Queen ...

Gavin painting a maraca from the March themed BabbaBox at Barefoot Books.

Gavin painting a maraca from the March themed BabbaBox at Barefoot Books.

Last summer I had the pleasure of reviewing the BabbaBox?from BabbaCo, a subscription based, themed arts and crafts kit, designed to bring families together completing activities and through careful preparation, taking away some of the stress and chaos of planning an activity, then having to retrieve all the necessary items.

This weekend, at a blogger event held at one of my favorite local bookstores, Barefoot Books in picturesque, historical Concord, MA, BabbaCo made it possible for our families and children to get together and create some of the activities that are available in the March BabbaBox, themed ?Shake It Up.? This particular kit includes ways for kids to paint their own maracas with watercolors, string bells onto a tambourine that can be personalized, read the popular book from Barefoot Books, Animal Boogie, that gets kids up movin? and groovin?. Though I personally didn?t experience them at the event, the kit includes additional coloring pages, a scarf great for dancing, and a code for an iPad/iPhone app that can be redeemed.

Another local venture, UrbanSitter,?also provided babysitters at the event, to help keep the kids engaged and entertained, while the adults got to have a little time with Jessica Kim, the founder of the BabbaBox.

On my 4 trips to Toy Fair, I?ve met many founders of toy companies and inventors. No matter what the product is, there is nothing more amazing then to meet the people behind the concept. Many of us connect on-line with strangers through social media, but it?s sort of like reading a book. Until you meet people face-to-face, it?s a completely different experience that, when done right, can leave a lasting impression.

Jessica Kim is first and foremost a mother, just like the rest of us, with a passion. Many people blog about our individual passions whether it be toys, books, parenting, life or whatever strikes a chord on any given day. Jessica spoke briefly about her wake-up call with her mother?s diagnosis of cancer and frustration as a mom, that at the end of the day, she didn?t feel that she was spending enough time doing things WITH her family. She sums up her frustration buying arts and crafts supplies, which is another driving force behind the concept of the BabbaBox with this one quote, ?I didn?t need 500 googly eyes, I just needed 2.? Attention to small details is what makes Jessica unique, she spent the time to know each and everyone of us, writing personalized ?Thank You? cards to us for attending, something I?ve never experienced in 3 1/2 years of attending brand-sponsored events and activities.

One of the main points I felt was important when reviewing the BabbaBox is that, there are times when you buy presents for multiple children and it can seem financially daunting. So gifting a subscription service, such as this one, can be a win-win for everyone. Use the code BOSTONMOM to get $10 off the first month, or a monthly membership.

We attended the event at no-cost and were able to experience many of the activities present in the March BabbaBox. We received a sneak peek at some of the activities of the April BabbaBox, ?Backyard Birdies.? We also received a book complimentary from Barefoot Books to take home and read as a family. No other compensation was received for the purpose of review.

Large robotic jellyfish could one day patrol oceans

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Virginia Tech College of Engineering researchers have unveiled a life-like, autonomous robotic jellyfish the size and weight of a grown man, 5 foot 7 inches in length and weighing 170 pounds.

The prototype robot, nicknamed Cyro, is a larger model of a robotic jellyfish the same team -- headed by Shashank Priya of Blacksburg, Va., and professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech -- unveiled in 2012. The earlier robot, dubbed RoboJelly, is roughly the size of a man's hand, and typical of jellyfish found along beaches.

"A larger vehicle will allow for more payload, longer duration and longer range of operation," said Alex Villanueva of St-Jacques, New-Brunswick, Canada, and a doctoral student in mechanical engineering working under Priya. "Biological and engineering results show that larger vehicles have a lower cost of transport, which is a metric used to determine how much energy is spent for traveling."

Both robots are part of a multi-university, nationwide $5 million project funded by U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Office of Naval Research. The goal is to place self-powering, autonomous machines in waters for the purposes of surveillance and monitoring the environment, in addition to other uses such as studying aquatic life, mapping ocean floors, and monitoring ocean currents.

Jellyfish are attractive candidates to mimic because of their ability to consume little energy owing to a lower metabolic rate than other marine species. Additionally, they appear in wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors, allowing for several designs. They also inhabit every major oceanic area of the world and are capable of withstanding a wide range of temperatures in both fresh and salt waters. Most species are found in shallow coastal waters, but some have been found in depths 7,000 meters below sea level.

Partner universities in the project are Providence College in Rhode Island, the University of California Los Angeles, the University of Texas at Dallas, and Stanford University. Priya's team is building the jellyfish body models, integrating fluid mechanics and developing control systems.

Cyro is modeled and named after the jellyfish cyanea capillata, Latin for Llion's Manemain jellyfishJellyfish, with "Cyro" derived from "cyanea" and "robot." As with its predecessor, this robot is in the prototype stage, years away from use in waters. A new prototype model already is under construction at Virginia Tech's Durham Hall, where Priya's Center for Energy Harvesting Materials and Systems is based.

"We hope to improve on this robot and reduce power consumption and improve swimming performance as well as better mimic the morphology of the natural jellyfish," Villanueva said, adding that the project also allows researchers such as himself to better understand aquatic creatures live. "Our hopes for Cyro's future is that it will help understand how the propulsion mechanism of such animal scales with size."

A stark difference exists between the larger and smaller robots. Cyro is powered by a rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery, whereas the smaller models were tethered, Priya said. Experiments have also been conducted on powering jellyfish with hydrogen but there is still much research to be done in that area.

In both cases, the jellyfish must operate on their own for months or longer at a time as engineers likely won't be able to capture and repair the robots, or replace power sources. "Cyro showed its ability to swim autonomously while maintaining a similar physical appearance and kinematics as the natural species," Priya said, adding that the robot is simultaneously able to collect, store, analyze, and communicate sensory data. This autonomous operation in shallow water conditions is already a big step towards demonstrating the use of these creatures."

How does the robot swim? Its body consists of a rigid support structure with direct current electric motors which control the mechanical arms that are used in conjunction with an artificial mesoglea, or jelly-based pulp of the fish's body, creating hydrodynamic movement.

With no central nervous system, jellyfish instead use a diffused nerve net to control movement and can complete complex functions. A parallel study on a bio-inspired control system is in progress which will eventually replace the current simplified controller. As with the smaller models, Cyro's skin is composed of a thick layer of silicone, squishy in one's hand. It mimics the sleek jellyfish skin and is placed over a bowl-shaped device containing the electronic guts of the robot. When moving, the skin floats and moves with the robot, looking weirdly alive.

"It has been a great experience to finally realize the biomimetic and bio-inspired robotic vehicles," Priya said. "Nature has too many secrets and we were able to find some of them but many still remain. We hope to find a mechanism to continue on this journey and resolve the remaining puzzles."

Brain scans might predict future criminal behavior

Friday, March 29, 2013

A new study conducted by The Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, N.M., shows that neuroimaging data can predict the likelihood of whether a criminal will reoffend following release from prison.

The paper, which is to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, studied impulsive and antisocial behavior and centered on the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a portion of the brain that deals with regulating behavior and impulsivity.

The study demonstrated that inmates with relatively low anterior cingulate activity were twice as likely to reoffend than inmates with high-brain activity in this region.

"These findings have incredibly significant ramifications for the future of how our society deals with criminal justice and offenders," said Dr. Kent A. Kiehl, who was senior author on the study and is director of mobile imaging at MRN and an associate professor of psychology at the University of New Mexico. "Not only does this study give us a tool to predict which criminals may reoffend and which ones will not reoffend, it also provides a path forward for steering offenders into more effective targeted therapies to reduce the risk of future criminal activity."

The study looked at 96 adult male criminal offenders aged 20-52 who volunteered to participate in research studies. This study population was followed over a period of up to four years after inmates were released from prison.

"These results point the way toward a promising method of neuroprediction with great practical potential in the legal system," said Dr. Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, Stillman Professor of Practical Ethics in the Philosophy Department and the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University, who collaborated on the study. "Much more work needs to be done, but this line of research could help to make our criminal justice system more effective."

The study used the Mind Research Network's Mobile Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) System to collect neuroimaging data as the inmate volunteers completed a series of mental tests.

"People who reoffended were much more likely to have lower activity in the anterior cingulate cortices than those who had higher functioning ACCs," Kiehl said. "This means we can see on an MRI a part of the brain that might not be working correctly -- giving us a look into who is more likely to demonstrate impulsive and anti-social behavior that leads to re-arrest."

The anterior cingulate cortex of the brain is "associated with error processing, conflict monitoring, response selection, and avoidance learning," according to the paper. People who have this area of the brain damaged have been "shown to produce changes in disinhibition, apathy, and aggressiveness. Indeed, ACC-damaged patients have been classed in the 'acquired psychopathic personality' genre."

Kiehl says he is working on developing treatments that increase activity within the ACC to attempt to treat the high-risk offenders.

Cyprus bank controls to last a month, minister says

By Karolina Tagaris and Michele Kambas

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cyprus conceded on Thursday that tight capital controls would remain in force longer than expected as the island's banks reopened for the first time after the government was forced to accept a tough EU rescue package to avoid bankruptcy.

Cypriots lined up calmly to withdraw limited amounts of cash, but there was no sign of a run on deposits, as had been feared.

Banks were shut for nearly two weeks while the government negotiated a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) international bailout, the first in Europe's single currency zone to impose losses on bank depositors.

Curbs on money movements imposed after the bailout would be phased out over about a month, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said.

"A number of restrictions will be lifted and gradually, probably over a period of about a month according to the estimates of the central bank, the restrictions will be fully lifted," he told reporters.

The government initially said the controls would remain in place for a week, subject to review. Economists say they will prove hard to lift as long as the economy is in crisis.

Bank staff turned up for work early on Thursday as cash was delivered by armored trucks, and queues of a dozen or more people formed at bank branches in the capital, with uniformed security guards on duty.

Doors opened at noon (6:00 a.m. EDT) and closed at 6 p.m., but there was no visible run on deposits.

A lot of money had already left electronically. Figures published by the Central Bank of Cyprus showed that savers from other euro zone countries withdrew 18 percent of their deposits from the stricken island in February, as talk of a tax on bank accounts gained ground. Overall private sector bank deposits in Cyprus fell by 2.2 percent to 46.4 billion euros last month, after a similar drop in January.

To help the Cyprus banks weather the crisis, the European Central Bank flew in 5 billion euros ($6.4 billion) in cash overnight from Frankfurt, a German newspaper reported.

The government said it had appointed a panel to investigate the banking meltdown and look into claims of junior bondholders.

"It will have a broad mandate," said Constantinos Petrides, under-secretary to the Cypriot president. "It will investigate criminal, civil and political responsibilities."

The capital controls decree was taped to the windows of bank branches and staff handed out copies to customers. In Nicosia, there was relief, but some apprehension about what might happen.

"You've no idea how much I've been waiting for this," said 64-year-old pensioner Froso Kokikou, waiting in line at a branch of Cyprus Popular Bank, also known as Laiki.

"I feel a sense of fear and disappointment having to queue up like this; it feels like a Third World country, but what can you do?" Kokikou said. "This is what they imposed on us and we have to live with it."

MATURITY

Kostas Nikolaou, a 60-year-old pensioner, said the uncertainty of the past two weeks had been "like a slow death".

He added: "How can they tell you that you can't access your own money in the bank? It's our money, we are entitled to it."

Many of those waiting in line were elderly people, who said they had run out of cash because they did not have bank cards.

President Nicos Anastasiades praised the "maturity and responsibility" shown by Cypriots in the face of the crisis.

"We have shown that not only do we want to drag our country out of this difficult position, but that we will do it," a statement from the presidency said.

Anastasiades has taken a 25 percent pay cut, while cabinet ministers' pay will go down by 20 percent, an official said.

The stock exchange said it would remain closed on Thursday.

On international markets, German 10-year bond yields fell to their lowest level since August on fears of spillover from the Cyprus crisis to other struggling euro zone members. Yields fell 2 basis points to 1.256 percent. Traders cited the risk that depositors in other countries could take fright at any signs of a run on deposits in Cyprus.

CASH LIMITS

A Finance Ministry decree limited cash withdrawals to no more than 300 euros per day and banned the cashing of cheques.

The island's central bank will review all commercial transactions over 5,000 euros and scrutinize transactions over 200,000 euros on an individual basis. People leaving Cyprus may take only 1,000 euros with them.

A police source told Reuters that passengers leaving Cypriot airports were subject to extra searches. Notices at Larnaka airport warned travelers of the new restrictions and officers had orders to confiscate cash above the 1,000 euro limit.

With just 860,000 people, Cyprus has about 68 billion euros in its banks - a vastly outsized financial system that attracted deposits from abroad, especially Russia, as an offshore haven but foundered when investments in neighboring Greece went sour.

The European Union and International Monetary Fund concluded that Cyprus could not afford a rescue unless it imposed losses on depositors, seen as anathema in previous euro zone bailouts.

Foreign minister Kasoulides reflected the anger of many Cypriots when he told French newspaper Les Echos: "Europe is pretending to help us but the price to pay is too high: nothing less than the brutal destruction of our economic model."

"CYPRUS EURO"

Cyprus's difficulties have sent jitters around the fragile single European currency zone. Yields on Slovenia's two-year bonds surged to nearly 7 percent on Thursday in a sign that investors are pricing in a high risk of default, despite denials by the new government that it needs a bailout.

The imposition of capital controls has led economists to warn that a second-class "Cyprus euro" could emerge, with funds trapped on the island worth less than euros that can be freely spent abroad.

Reflecting fears of a spillover, ratings agency Moody's said it kept euro zone strugglers Ireland and Portugal on negative outlook, citing the Cyprus bailout as an extra risk.

The European Commission said the capital controls were legal and justified under EU law provided they were strictly temporary and proportionate. The EU executive said it would monitor "the need to extend the validity of or revise the measures".

The bailout, agreed in Brussels on Monday, looks set to push Cyprus deeper into an economic slump, shrink the banking sector and cost thousands of jobs.

Cyprus Popular Bank, the country's second biggest, will be closed and its guaranteed deposits of up to 100,000 euros transferred to the largest bank, Bank of Cyprus.

Deposits of more than 100,000 euros at both banks, too big to enjoy a state guarantee, will be frozen, and some of those funds will be exchanged for shares issued by the banks to recapitalize them.

While big depositors will lose money, the authorities say deposits up to 100,000 euros will be protected.

($1 = 0.7824 euros)

In Her Own Words: True Stories From Women Veterans

Women veterans are part of the national conversation as never before. This topicality is partially thanks to the fact that the Pentagon has lifted its official ban on women in combat.

Credit also goes to the success of the Oscar-nominated film The Invisible War, which shone a harsh spotlight on the underreported problem of sexual assault in the military. And the women veterans organization Grace After Fire has received national media attention for its peer support programs. ??

But the individual stories of women veterans are the most powerful indicators of a larger truth: Women veterans experience all the same issues as male veterans, but they also face difficulties specific to their gender.

?

?

In honor of Women Veterans Month?and Women?s History Month?TakePart spoke to three women vets about their transitions from life overseas to life back at home.

Brandi?s Story

The antipsychotic medication finally helped Brandi remember her nightmares.

Brandi, 30, lives in her hometown of Lincoln, Indiana. She joined the National Guard when she was 17. A young wife and mother, she deployed to Iraq in May 2007 and returned home in May 2008. She tells TakePart, ?I had missed out on a whole year of my daughter?s life. That is something that I will never get back, but I try to make up for it every day of her life?it?s very hard?to leave and return to children that have changed so much.?

?Most of my family never really asked me what happened while I was in Iraq,? Brandi says. ?I am very grateful for that. They let me tell them stories as I was ready. They were there to listen and not cast any judgments.?

Upon her return, Brandi divorced her husband of five years. She says, ?Not long after leaving for Iraq, I found out he was cheating. This is pretty common with many married soldiers. I suppose better now than in 20 years.?

Thankfully, she has a family she calls ?very supportive.?

?Most of my family never really asked me what happened while I was in Iraq,? Brandi says. ?I am very grateful for that. They let me tell them stories as I was ready. They were there to listen and not cast any judgments.?

She registered with the VA hospital. Previously, her only prescription was for birth control. Suddenly she found herself with five prescriptions for different medications.

Like many soldiers, Brandi came back from war with a major sleep problem. After she participated in a sleep study, the doctors informed her that she woke up an average of 27 times per hour during the night. She could never remember any of it?all she knew was that she started each day exhausted. The doctors chalked it up to old-fashioned insomnia and prescribed sleeping pills. The pills didn?t help.

?Try going 4 years without sleeping,? Brandi tells TakePart. ?It?s hell.?

Four years after she returned from war, Brandi was finally diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder. A doctor took her off the ineffective sleeping aids and instead gave her an antipsychotic.

?It made me sleep, but it also showed why I [hadn?t been] sleeping,? Brandi said. ?When sleeping, I would have nightmares of being in a war zone.?

Vanasa?s Story

Life as a Marine wasn?t exactly a heroine?s journey for Vanasa.

Vanasa, 42, of Riverton, Utah, joined the Marine Corps when she was 19. She served for two years in Okinawa, Japan, during Desert Storm, then was sent to Camp Pendleton in California. At the end of her service, she was given an ?other than honorable? discharge and went to college without the benefit of the GI Bill. ?By the time she graduated college, she was able to successfully appeal and have her discharge changed to ?honorable.? Unfortunately, her newly reinstated GI Bill benefits did not apply to the $20,000 in student loans she had already accrued.

?In the two decades since I have served, there have been very few instances where it has benefited me tangibly at all.?

Vanasa delayed motherhood in exchange for a military career and a degree. She said, ?We always have the time clock ticking trying to get a job and college in before [having] kids. After Marine Corps and college, I was 30 and ready to start a family; so an advanced degree wasn?t really an option. ?I had one kid at 33 and one at 38. Now I am 42 with a 3-year-old, wondering what?s going to happen when I rejoin the workforce.?

She says she doesn?t regret her two decades of service, but tells Take Part that ?in the two decades since I have served, there have been very few instances where it has benefited me tangibly at all. I am a divorced mom of two who is unemployed and uninsured with a student loan debt. Supposedly, there are programs out there, but I don?t know where to begin and what are worthwhile pursuits.?

Michele?s Story

War left an invisible mark on Michele.

Michele is 32 and lives in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She joined the Navy when she was 19, in December 2000. She traveled everywhere from Thailand to Iraq, which she says was ?an insane asylum? during her time there in 2005 and 2006. By the time she left in 2008, she had been deployed six times. As a lesbian, she had become ?disenfranchised? with the military and especially the Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell policy.

?They never tell you that the world is different overall and sometimes people don?t give a damn what you did ?over there? as a contractor or a military member.?

Her mother thought Michele came home with PTSD; Michele said that just might be true.

She tells Take Part, ?After getting out, I was lost, but I was lucky to have a family that was supportive for the most part. I did not file with the VA, because I heard all horror stories and there were so many people coming back with half a brain and no legs not getting proper VA care. What were they going to do for me, a woman vet who was not brandishing a Purple Heart or visible scars? As the last decade can show, not much.?

The vet still struggles with emotional issues related to her time in the military. She says, ?It is probably why [my mother] allowed me to get a dog. My mom is not a dog person. She? figured it would help.? Michele?s chocolate lab is named Jane.

Michele tells TakePart that military training on re-acclimating to society after deployment ?is complete bullshit?. They never tell you that the world is different overall and sometimes people don?t give a damn what you did ?over there? as a contractor or a military member.?

Did you serve in the military, or are you close to someone who did? Talk about coming back to civilian life in COMMENTS.

Internet Promotion Can Provide You With Many Benefits. Try Using ...

Every so often you get an idea for an amazing business. When you have a good idea, be sure you?re able to effectively market it that so you can create business for yourself. This article will provide you with an introduction to this popular form of advertising.

Successful internet marketing should include video uploads that have the potential to go viral. Be sure to include a link that goes back to your website in the video description. By using this technique, you will increase the amount of visitors to your website.

For example, if you sell websites, partner up with a writer to offer his or her customers discounts. You can also offer discounted writing services, provided by your partner, to your web customers.

This internet marketing tip will help you out. Reassure your visitors that they can have confidence when they come to your site. You should have an accessible privacy policy visible on every page of your website. This will give your customers assurance that their money transactions will be handled properly. Your customers need to know that you are only selling your services ? not their information.

Be sure your page contains information customers want. You don?t need to create an entire encyclopedia, but having a good amount of information that your customers can easily access is important. Build up your website with useful content, interesting reviews and other things that shows your visitors that you know what you are doing and that you are not just a fly by night presence.

Show testimonials and comments from your customers on your site. Savvy consumers read the comments posted by other users and use those comments to help them make decisions about purchasing certain products. It makes them feel more comfortable with your company, and as a result they are more likely to purchase from you.

Give away a free gift with a purchase; this will make your customers feel like they are valued. When you give things away for free, it is very easy for you to get your reputation up and for people to trust you.

Offering guaranteed products and risk free purchases can help encourage people to buy from you. This provides your company with credibility and your customers with confidence. Customers are more likely to trust you with a guarantee.

Good Internet marketers know the importance of being enthusiastic and positive. Make sure you communicate your confidence in your products. If you are believable, you will get them as excited as you are. Be sure to update your content often and make sure all your information is up-to-date.

Discounted prices are a great way to boost your marketing strategy. This often encourages visitors to buy. You can do this easily, simply by showing the discounted price right next to an items original price. You can encourage them to order by telling them how much they can save by buying an item at the discounted price.

A database to manage your customer relationships offers many advantages. Keep track of purchase of past and current customers is easy with the CMR database. You can then create custom communications that highlight accessories, complementary, or similar products to those which they have most recently purchased from your company.

Know your audience, and what kinds of things they want in a website. Once you?ve figured out your target audience, it should be a simple process to discover what content will bring them back to your site again and again.

One trick that improves internet marketing outcomes is using the word ?guaranteed? frequently. While the value of a guarantee is based on the integrity of the company that provides it, people feel more secure knowing that they are not incurring a risk when they purchase your product. People work long hours to earn their salaries, and a strong guarantee makes them more likely to part with their hard-earned cash.

Most cell phone companies can help you set up a ?dedicated business phone number,? which allows your customers to call you on your current device. Getting a number isn?t difficult, so make the time to do it.

Encourage new visitors to your site with a $1 promotion. You can build a buzz and get the traffic flowing to your site. When people think they are getting a deal from you, they tend to buy more than one thing. Stay confident and believe in your product!

Find out what people think about events and promotions to discover what you can do to generate success in the future. It is helpful to watch the responses, in forums and blogs, to your online promotional event or advertising campaign. Once you see the feedback, use it to tweak your promotions and give the customers what they want.

Allow your individuality to shine through your campaign. Make sure your website has a picture of you, and include your name throughout your advertising. Hand write a note to welcome new visitors to your site.

Pay attention to your competitors. Their strategies may help you refine your own, allowing you to better reach your customer base. If you see yourself as a potential customer for their products, then they are doing something right. You should find a way to incorporate these ideas into your strategy.

Your mailing list should always have personalized correspondence. Customers and possible customers need something that isn?t impersonal. Haven?t you ever been frustrated with the amount of junk email you get each day? By sending personalized and targeted emails, you will set yourself apart.

A good technique to use with your Internet marketing is to offer a discount for customers who make a purchase over a specified amount. For example, if your customer spends more than $200, give them a 10% discount. This helps to get your customers to add products on.

If you want to draw in traffic for your site, you should think about circulating a press release. If you are not a great writer, there are sources online that provide you with your own press release in your niche. Needless to say, a great press release can create a buzz around your business.

Keep in mind what your site?s visitors are looking for and plan your sire accordingly. If you give them what they?re expecting, your marketing efforts will definitely pay off in increased sales. Also, solicit objective opinions regarding your website. You can even ask some of your online friends to check it out or ask for feedback from forum members. It is very important that you do plenty of research and construct a site that will help people get what they want.

It?s critical for internal links to promote your keywords. Keywords are how search engines find your site, so it?s an important part of website building. People typically stay on a website for a very short time. If you have relevant posts showcased near what they are looking at, they are more likely to keep clicking within your website. Internal links can not only keep your visitors? attention, but also make it easier for search engines to index your site.

Knowing what your competition is up to is a necessity if you want to stay ahead of them. Take tips and tricks that you can see other similar businesses are using to generate business, and apply them to your own site. If you have a particular service other websites seem to be lacking in, make sure to highlight these on your site in an effort to beat the competition.

Add a chat feature to your Internet business website to encourage your customers to converse. They need to feel like your site is a place to hang and chat with other members of the club rather then just a place to visit when they are ready to buy something. If you use a group atmosphere, this will ease some of the tensions that consumers have.

Placing yourself in a good position with marketing will help maximize your profits. Since these tips will help you become successful, do not ignore them. By paying attention to what you are doing, you should find success in no time.

Incentives will always drive sales if you offer them to your customers. This could include free shipping, faster shipping or free gift wrapping. Another excellent option for incentives is to offer a limited time offer for the first comers. This will tempt your visitors to purchase your products.

There are so many resources available about Internet Marketing that you might feel overwhelmed. This article has provided you some excellent advice to assist you. Keep this article for future reference.

Oculus founder: booze and Rift don't mix

Oculus Rift cofounder

You know that rule about not drinking and operating heavy machinery at the same time? You can widen that common-sense topic to include not getting tooled up before strapping the Oculus Rift to your face. In conversation with Joystiq, company founder Palmer Luckey has mentioned that the nausea-inducing effects of virtual reality can, unsurprisingly, become magnified if you combine it with the demon drink. Hey, it's something to bear in mind before you lose your lunch.

John Edwards? daughter speaks out on his affair

Cate Edwards with her father, John, in North Carolina in 2012 (Sara D. Davis/Getty Images)John Edwards? daughter Cate is finally speaking out about her father?s affair with a former campaign aide, which effectively ended his marriage to her late mother, Elizabeth, and killed his political career.

?I was devastated, and I was disappointed,? Cate Edwards tells NBC?s Savannah Guthrie in an interview set to air Friday on the ?Today? show and ?Rock Center with Brian Williams.? ?I mean, these are my parents. I had grown up with a lot of love in my family.?

According to interview excerpts released by the network, Edwards tells NBC her father told her about the affair directly. Asked if she was mad, she tells Guthrie, ?Yeah, yeah of course.?

In spite of her anger over her father's affair, Cate Edwards, who is a lawyer, stood by John Edwards' side when he went on trial last year for alleged campaign finance violations related to his efforts to hide his affair from his wife and the public. The proceedings ended in a mistrial.

Edwards tells NBC that she met Rielle Hunter, the campaign videographer who later gave birth to John Edwards? baby, during her father?s 2008 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, but implies that she hasn?t since. (Cate and her siblings, Jack and Emma Claire, have reportedly met their half-sister, Frances Quinn Hunter.) Asked about Hunter?s book trashing Elizabeth Edwards, who died in 2010, Cate calls the book ?a poor choice.?

?I guess that?s all I can say,? she says.

Asked about the death of her mother, Edwards says she is still grieving and misses her mother every day, in part because of small things.

?I get away with bad grammar. I never used to get away with bad grammar,? she tells NBC. ?You know, I find a great deal online. We were super competitive about finding the best deal online.?

Georges St-Pierre cast in the next ?Captain America?

The last time we saw UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, he was defending his belt against Nick Diaz at UFC 158. But now you'll get to see him outside the cage, as he was just cast in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." GSP will play Batroc the Leaper, a French mercenary and kickboxer with a penchant for kicking Captain America.

[Related: Georges St-Pierre apologizes for controversial fight attire]

GSP is the perfect fit. He's French-Canadian, and French was his first language. As for the kicking:

It doesn't look like he'll have to do much research to figure that part of the character out.

Supreme Court Gay Marriage Hearing Tickets, While Technically Free, Run Up To $6,000 For A Seat

WASHINGTON ? The most expensive ticket to "The Book of Mormon" on Broadway: $477. The face value of a great seat for this year's Super Bowl: $1,250. Guaranteed seats to watch the U.S. Supreme Court hear this week's gay marriage cases: about $6,000.

Tickets to the two arguments that begin Tuesday are technically free. But getting them requires lining up days or hours ahead, or paying someone else to. The first people got in line Thursday, bringing the price of saving a seat to around $6,000.

For some, putting a value on the seats is meaningless.

"It's just not possible," said Fred Sainz a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay rights organization, which began employing two people to stand in line Thursday.

The court will hear arguments Tuesday over California's ban on same-sex marriage. On Wednesday, the court will take up the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 federal law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. Supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage say the cases are so potentially historic that they want to be inside the courtroom to watch, no matter what the cost in time or money.

Part of the reason the seats are so coveted is the court doesn't allow TV broadcasts of its arguments, so coming in person is the only way to see the justices at work. The court has said it will release transcripts of the hearings as well as audio recordings roughly two hours after each case ends, but advocates say that's no substitute for being there.

Seats, meanwhile, are at a premium because there aren't that many. The courtroom seats about 500 people, but seats are reserved for court staff, journalists and guests of the justices and lawyers arguing the case. After those people are seated, there will be about 100 seats Tuesday for lawyers who are members of the Supreme Court bar and at least 60 seats for the general public. An additional 30 seats for the public will rotate every three to five minutes. Tickets for all those seats are handed out on a first come, first served basis.

For the most controversial cases, the line to get those tickets can start to form about a day before. When the court heard three days of arguments on health care last year, the first people arrived three days early.

This time, the line started even earlier. By Monday morning there were more than three dozen people waiting, even as snow was falling. Several in the line said they were being paid, while others included college students and a substitute teacher. People in line said they passed the time talking and reading.

There were games of cards and at one point people watched the television show "The West Wing" on one person's computer. Those waiting said they'd made friends, and they traded watching each other's chairs and sleeping bags to go for bathroom breaks or coffee. On Monday morning, one man came around offering others donuts.

Donna Clarke, 62, of Mountain View, Calif., arrived Sunday night and was 37th in line. The Army veteran who has been with her partner for 27 years had intended to just be part of a planned demonstration outside the court Tuesday, but she decided to join the line when she realized it might be possible to get inside.

"I think there'll be a lot of my friends who will be very jealous," said Clarke, who intends to marry her partner in Massachusetts before they return to California, and said the Supreme Court's decision could be a "transformative moment" for the country.

Most of the people waiting in line are supporters of gay marriage. But opponents, too, said they intend to be at the court to watch.

Ken Klukowski, a lawyer at the Family Research Council and a professor at Liberty University School of Law in Virginia, says these cases are "not just major, not just blockbuster, but historic." Klukowski said he expects to be getting up in the middle of the night to get in the separate line for members of the Supreme Court bar.

"No one knows how early but ridiculously early," Klukowski said.

For those willing to pay to get in, several Washington services will hold a person's place in line. One company charges $36 per hour, another $50, meaning the cost of a 5-day line stander comes in at $6,000. John Winslow, the operations manager of Linestanding.com, which like most other line standing services is also a courier service, said his service would be holding places for 40 to 50 clients, a number of them lawyers. His group held about 35 places in line for the health care arguments last year, he said. Most people, he said, are starting their line stander 24 hours before, so they'll spend $864 to attend.

Linestanding.com's owner, Mark Gross, said for many of his clients, attending is personal.

"Health care was more about public policy and the direction that the country was going politically," Gross said. "But this really affects people in a personal way,"

Kate Kendell, the executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights in California, contacted Linestanding.com three weeks before the argument to secure her space. Kendell, a lawyer, said she tried to get into a Supreme Court case that involved gay rights in 1995. By the time she arrived at 3 a.m. on the day of the argument, she said, there were so many people she could only get in a line that allows people to watch three minutes of the argument. This time she isn't taking any chances.

"This is one of those experiences that I want to see firsthand. I want to see the faces of the justices. I want to hear their questions," she said.

She initially planned for her line stander to start at 4 a.m. Tuesday but has since moved the time up twice.

"All I care about is being in that courtroom and I'm pretty much willing to do whatever I have to do," Kendell said.

Space probes set to smash into asteroid in 2022

ESA

The ambitious European-led Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment mission, or AIDA, is to launch in 2019.

By Miriam Kramer
Space.com

THE WOODLANDS, Texas ? Scientists in Europe and the United States are moving forward with plans to intentionally smash a spacecraft into a huge nearby asteroid in 2022 to see inside the space rock.

The ambitious European-led Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment mission, or AIDA, is slated to launch in 2019 to send two spacecraft ? one built by scientists in the U.S, and the other by the European Space Agency ? on a three-year voyage to the asteroid Didymos and its companion. Didymos has no chance of impacting the Earth, which makes it a great target for this kind of mission, scientists involved in the mission said in a presentation Tuesday?here at the 44th annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

Didymos is actually a binary asteroid system consisting of two separate space rocks bound together by gravity. The main asteroid is enormous, measuring 2,625 feet (800 meters) across. It is orbited by a smaller asteroid ?about 490 feet (150 m).

The Didymos asteroid setup is an intriguing target for the AIDA mission because it will give scientists their first close look at a binary space rock system while also yielding new insights into ways to deflect dangerous asteroids that could pose an impact threat to the Earth. [Photos of Potentially Dangerous Asteroids]

"Binary systems are quite common," said Andy Rivkin, a scientist at Johns Hopkins'Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md., working on the U.S. portion of AIDA project. "This will be our first rendezvous with a binary system."

In 2022, the Didymos asteroids will be about 6.8 million miles (11 million km) from the Earth, during a close approach, which is why AIDA scientists have timed their mission for that year.

Rivkin and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Laboratory are building DART (short for Double Asteroid Redirection Test), one of the two spacecraft making up the tag team AIDA mission. Like its acronym suggests, the DART probe will crash directly into the smaller Didymos asteroid while traveling at 14,000 mph (22,530 km/h), creating a crater during an impact that will hopefully sending the space rock slightly off course, Rivkin said.

The European Space Agency is building the second AIDA spacecraft, which is called the Asteroid Impact Monitor (or AIM). AIM will observe the impact from a safe distance, and the probe'sdata will be used with other data collected by telescopes on Earth to understand exactly what the impact did to the asteroid.

"AIM is the usual shoebox satellite," ESA researcher Jens Biele, ?who works on the AIM spacecraft, said. "It's nothing very fancy."

AIDA scientists hope their mission will push the smaller Didymos asteroid off course by only a few millimeters. The small space rock orbits the larger, primary Didymos asteroid once every 12 hours.

The goal, Rivkin said, is to use the DART impact as a testbed for the most basic method of asteroid deflection: a direct collision with a spacecraft. ?If the mission is successful, it could have implications for how space agencies around the world learn how to deflect larger, more threatening asteroid that could pose a threat to Earth, he added.

At the moment, AIDA researchers are not sure of the exact composition of the Didymos asteroids. They could just be a loose conglomeration of rocks traveling together through the solar system, or made of much denser stuff.

But once DART impacts the asteroid, scientists will be able to measure how much the asteroid's orbit is affected as well as classify its surface composition, Rivkin said. And by studying how debris floats outward from the impact site after the crash, researchers could also better prepare for the conditions astronauts may encounter during future manned missions to asteroids ? such as NASA's project to send astronauts to an asteroid by 2025, he added.

The AIDA mission's AIM spacecraft is expected to cost about 150 million euros (about $194 million), while the DART spacecraft is slated to cost about $150 million, mission officials said.

DNP Facebook introduces Replies threaded commenting for businesses and popular profiles

Starting today, Facebook is launching a new threaded Replies commenting system for users with more than 10,000 followers as well as Pages linked to brands and businesses. By placing the most "liked" conversation logs at the top of its related post, the social network hopes this new addition will improve interactions between groups and their readers. Qualified profiles should be able to opt-in to the feature today, but the company advises that it will be activated for all Pages and profiles with more than 10,000 followers on July 10th. As of now Replies is only supported on the site's desktop version, but Facebook plans to add this feature to its Graph API and mobile applications. While it's great to see the popular social network finally pulling its commenting system out of the Dark Ages, we can only imagine the flame wars that will ensue between followers. Moderators, start your engines.

Questions remain after Obama?s Israel trip

President Obama almost made it through his trip to Israel without demonstrating the incoherence at the heart of his approach to the region. Almost.

If he now understands and can recite how many times Israel has offered the Palestinians their own state, why was he lecturing Israeli students on the unjustness of the Palestinians lack of statehood?

If he extolled Israeli democracy, why wasn?t he telling?Mahmoud Abbas to have free and fair elections?

If he understands that there are to be ?two states for two peoples,? why doesn?t he adopt as U.S. policy ? as he did with ?1967 borders? plus land swaps ? the truism that the right of return?for Palestinians must be only?to the Palestinian state?

If he respects the Israelis? elected government and its right to make decisions on its own, why go to a university to implore college kids to lobby their government to make peace? And what else could Israel offer that hasn?t been tried already?

The biggest impediment to peace, of course, is that the Palestinian Authority has made a pact with Hamas. Maybe Obama should have mentioned that and the impossibility of a Palestinian state so long as that embrace continues.

The problem with merely changing rhetoric is that exposes the gap between speeches and mindset and between rhetoric and actions.

Nevertheless, friends of Israel will be glad to hear that Obama will leave the fruitless peace processing to Secretary of State John Kerry and not use his own good offices to strong-arm Israel. And?Obama has dropped the ?illegitimate? modifier to ?settlements.?

The most curious part of the trip came at the very end. I?have a great deal of sympathy?with this sentiment expressed by the New York Sun:

Mr. Obama ended his visit by hornswoggling Prime Minister Netanyahu into apologizing to the Turkish premier, Recep Erdogan, for the deaths on the?Motor Vessel Mavi Marmarra.?We don?t fault Mr. Netanyahu. . . .?But sending the?Mavi Marmarra?to run Israel?s blockade was one of the most provocative acts any major country has ever countenanced against Israel. The blood of the nine dead is entirely on Turkish hands. It was the Turk who owed the apology. By maneuvering things the other way around Mr. Obama offered an incentive for more trouble that will mar the good feelings he seems so sincerely to want to engender.

Ironically, what?a U.N. investigation?defended (astonishingly for the United Nations)?? Israel?s right of self-defense and right to maintain a blockade? Obama pressured Israel to apologize for to the enablers of the raid.

One can argue that the terms if the apology are muted. It went to pains to reiterate that?Israel?s own report found there?were missteps (?In light of Israel?s investigation into the incident, which pointed to a number of operational mistakes, the prime minister expressed Israel?s apology to the Turkish people for any mistakes that might have led to the loss of life or injury?).

One can hope that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu got something more than restoration of diplomatic relations (A green light from Obama on Iran? A promise of bunker-buster bombs?) to make it worth his while. But to the outside world this will look like the United States leaning on Israel to apologize for defending itself. That, unfortunately, sends the wrong signal to the PA, Hamas, Turkey?and just about everyone in the region. And unless Israel got something very dear in return, it suggests that Obama still views Israel as the party responsible for conflict and violence.
