LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Andrew Wiggins, headed to Kansas as one of the nation's most highly recruited basketball players, and soccer player Morgan Andrews, a Notre Dame recruit, were honored as national prep athletes of the year on Tuesday night.

Wiggins averaged a double-double in 25 minutes per game at Huntington St. Joseph's Prep in West Virginia. The Toronto native has been a fixture on Canada's junior national team. He twice led bronze medal-winning teams at the international level.

He received the silver trophy from Indiana Pacers All-Star Paul George, San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers and Olympic medal-winning sprinter Bryshon Nellum.

"It's just a blessing," Wiggins said after the presentation in Hollywood. "I kind of don't realize at first it's such a big deal. I think it will hit me more afterward."

Wiggins joined such storied past winners as LeBron James, Dwight Howard and Kevin Love. Wiggins said his goal has been to play in the NBA "ever since I was on earth."

His father played professionally overseas, and Wiggins recalled watching him play when he was a small boy.

At Kansas, Wiggins wants to help deliver the Jayhawks a national championship.

"I think I can give the fans what we want," he said.

Andrews became just the second soccer player to win the national award in its 11-year history. The forward from Milford (N.H.) High scored 31 goals and had 18 assists while leading her team to a 16-3-1 record and the Division II state title. Andrews was captain of the national Under-17 women's team last year. She's also an All-State placekicker for her school's football team.

"Let me know your longest field goal and I'll put in a call for you," Rivers jokingly told Andrews.

She received her award from U.S. national soccer team star Abby Wambach and three-time Olympic champion beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor, who retired after the London Olympics.

"It's been an incredible experience," said Andrews, who thanked her small hometown for its support. "This award means the world to me."

Andrews said her goal is to make the U.S. roster for the 2015 Women's World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

"My goal is to always do the best I can possibly do and to promote the game," she said, "and hopefully win a couple of national championships."

Wiggins beat out nominees Trayvon Bromell, a sprinter from Gibbs High in St. Petersburg, Fla.; USC-bound quarterback Max Browne of Skyline High in Sammamish, Wash.; cross country runner Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J.; and center fielder Clint Frazier of Loganville (Ga.) High, who was recently drafted No. 1 by the Cleveland Indians.

Andrews won over nominees Sarah Baxter, a distance runner from Simi Valley (Calif.) High; volleyball setter Lauren Carlini of West Aurora High in Aurora, IIl.; softball pitcher Carley Hoover of D.W. Daniel High in Central, S.C.; basketball player Mercedes Russell of Springfield (Ore.) High; and heptathlete Kendell Williams of Kell High in Marietta, Ga.

The winners were chosen by a nationwide panel of sports experts who took into account individual accomplishments during the academic year, athletic, academic and character excellence, impact on their team's success and their achievements during their prep career.

The awards are sponsored by Gatorade.

Spurrier: Notre Dame football should join a conference

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) ? South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier thinks it's unanimous among his SEC brethren: Football and basketball players should get paid, and Notre?Dame should join a conference for football.

Spurrier opened his quip-filled media days address Tuesday by saying the 28 football and men's basketball coaches were in favor of paying players about $300 a game in football and perhaps a little less in hoops. Spurrier, who has made the pitch before, also said the coaches each indicated at spring meetings they were willing to pony up the $280,000 or so he estimated it would cost.

"This is tiny compared to the money that's coming in now," he said. "I think we all know that.

"I'm going to keep fighting for our guys. If President Obama would say, 'Spurrier, you and those coaches need to quit fighting for your players, that they get enough, they get enough full scholarship,' then I'll shut up about it."

He said that "little bit" ? $3,600 or so a year per player, he figures ? would give players some pocket money and help their parents attend games.

Spurrier also said the football coaches spoke with BCS executive director Bill Hancock, who told them he was meeting with the commissioners of BCS conferences ? and Notre?Dame's athletic director.

"We just started trying to figure out why the athletic director of Notre?Dame is equal to all the conference commissioners," Spurrier said. "Nobody had a good answer except that's the way it's always been done.

"For whatever reason, all 14 of our head coaches thought that Notre?Dame should join the ACC and play football like the rest of us."

The colorful coach added he knows that notion would anger "the Notre Damers" at him and his colleagues but didn't back down.

Asian shares edge up; RBA minutes lift Aussie

By Lisa Twaronite

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares inched higher on Tuesday, taking their cue from U.S. stocks after weaker-than-forecast U.S. retail sales growth backed the view that the Federal Reserve will hold off reducing its bond-buying stimulus anytime soon.

European stocks are seen opening steady, consolidating a sharp upward move over the last three weeks, with traders looking to closely watched German ZEW sentiment index for direction. The index is seen rising to 39.6, which would indicate a third straight month of growing confidence in the euro zone's biggest economy.

Financial spreadbetters expect Britain's FTSE 100 <.ftse> to open 4 points lower, or as much as 0.1 percent, Germany's DAX <.gdaxi> to open 6 to 7 points lower, or flat, and France's CAC 40 <.fchi> to open 3 points lower, or as much as 0.1 percent.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> added about 0.2 percent, while the U.S. dollar index edged lower.

The Australian dollar surged half a U.S. cent after the Reserve Bank of Australia said in the minutes of its July policy meeting that the current policy stance was appropriate for the time being.

The meeting had left the cash rate unchanged at a record-low 2.75 percent, and the market interpreted the minutes as showing less urgency to cut rates further than some investors had anticipated.

China shares slid, weighing on Hong Kong as both markets traded narrowly, with financial and property stocks dampened by an official news report saying quarterly or annual growth of below 7 percent was acceptable. Data on Monday showed that China's second-quarter economic growth cooled to 7.5 percent from the year-earlier period from 7.7 percent in January-March, in line with expectations.

"If it's true that 7 percent is the new base economic growth case, then it would greatly diminish chances that Beijing will even move to support the economy and this is a negative for the market," said Cao Xuefeng, a Chengdu-based analyst with Huaxi Securities.

BERNANKE TESTIMONY AWAITED

Investors await Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's twice-yearly monetary policy report to the Congress on Wednesday and Thursday for more clues on the U.S. central bank's policy outlook.

"The testimony is a venue to explain the Fed board's thinking, rather than Bernanke's own ideas. So I would expect his remarks to be a bit more hawkish than last week," said Minori Uchida, chief currency analyst at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

The Nikkei share average <.n225>, which touched a 7-1/2 week high, was up 0.5 percent, catching up after Japanese financial markets were closed for a public holiday on Monday.

Citigroup's strong earnings helped the S&P 500 <.spx> end higher on Monday for an eighth straight day, the longest such streak since mid-January. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> both closed at record highs on Monday for the third consecutive session. Data on Monday showed that U.S. retail sales increased 0.4 percent last month, half of the rise that economists polled by Reuters had forecast. The slowdown prompted economists to downgrade their second-quarter growth forecasts to an anaemic 1 percent increase.

While the Fed is focusing on labor market improvements to determine when to begin tapering its $85 billion in monthly purchases, weakness in the consumer sector could indicate broader economic problems.

A separate report on Monday showed that growth in New York state's manufacturing sector accelerated in July.

Yields on U.S. benchmark 10-year Treasury notes rose to 2.555 percent, above their U.S. close of 2.543 percent, but still well below a two-year high of 2.76 percent touched on July 8.

The dollar index <.dxy> erased early gains and was down about 0.1 percent at 82.964, but still far from last week's two-week low of 82.418. The index set a three-year high of 84.753 last Tuesday.

The dollar edged down 0.1 percent against the yen to 99.76 yen, well below last week's high of 101.21 yen on Wednesday.

The yen could face more pressure as the week progresses, due to expectations that Japan's upper house election on Sunday will result in a big victory for the ruling party of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, giving him more support to pursue his aggressively reflationary policies.

The euro rose to $1.3083, but was still well shy of last week's three-week high of $1.3201.

The Australian dollar surged about 1.0 percent to $0.9181, taking back lost ground after it fell below 90 U.S. cents on Friday on fears that the China GDP data would fall short of expectations. China is Australia's single biggest export market.

Commodity markets were mixed in the wake of the Chinese data, relieved growth did not disappoint but finding no fresh buying incentives.

Copper added 0.7 percent to $6,969.25 a tonne, while U.S. crude slipped 0.2 percent to $106.12 a barrel.

Spot gold fell 0.2 percent to $1,279.25 an ounce, after falling slightly on Monday.

How to Make the Leap to Higher Standard Cricket | Cricket coaching ...

Moving up to a higher standard is difficult.

You only have to look at the trail of failed professional cricketers who were tried and discarded at International level. But it's equally true of the level I coach at the moment. Boys have to move from 20 over soft ball pairs cricket to 40 over hard ball "real" cricket.

So whatever level you play, there is always a standard to jump up. How do you do it?

I can tell you from experience as a coach that its rare to see a completely ready player arrive at a new level. They may have skills and talents but at zero point for experience you are looking for different things than you expect from your star players.

For example, this season we have had several new boys come into the side to see how they fare. None have been an overnight explosion of success. Technically, tactically and even emotionally they are behind. However, the ones with potential all have similar traits:

Be ready to learn

As soon as you move up a level you will be in an unusual situation. There are huge chances to learn and gain experiences you would not have got lower down the ladder.

So look for them right from the start.

You may be a successful batsman who is brought up and told to bat at 8. Of course this is not ideal, but it's also a chance. You can show your ability to bat with the tail or finish a run chase. You can talk to good cricketers and learn how they play and practice, especially if you get to net with them, or even better, get one as a batting buddy.

This is not just psyco-babble "take the positives", it means you are getting full advantage of a situation. It shows the coach, captain and other senior players that you are willing to put in some effort to make it, and that always goes down well.

If you do this, it becomes less important whether you succeed or fail in these early days. Key people will start to say you have a "good attitude" and you are give more rope, more time and more opportunities.

Speak up

Good coaches and captains are always impressed by players who give opinions. This can be hard to do in a new team where you are the most junior - especially if you have a quiet personality - but you can always find a way.

Perhaps shouting at the captain that you should obviously have a 2nd slip is not the best approach. However, you could sidle up to him and ask if he had thought about strengthening the cordon as the ball is swinging. He might say no, but he will also be impressed.

Another way to speak up is to ask questions of senior players. You can ask why a field is set a certain way. You can even challenge a coach about why he is asking you to make a technical or tactical change. It's easy to do this in a non-confrontational, curious manner. It shows you are being mindful.

It's also crucial to ask for feedback. Say you are dropped after one game, rather than wait for the captain to explain, seek him out and ask what you need to do to get back in the team now he has seen you play. It shows a willingness to work hard, improve and fit into the team unit.

Be an athlete

There is a boy who plays in the team I coach who is technically behind the better players. However, in the short time he has played he has done 2 things:

  1. Improved his technique
  2. Shown his general athleticism

If you are making the jump up, both of these are born from your fitness. If you are strong, fast and mobile with a good body awareness, you will be given more chances at a higher level.

You will be able to bowl faster, hit harder and field better than other players with whom you compete. You will also have less injuries.

But sometimes an overlooked benefit of getting fitter is that you learn how your body moves, and so you are able to pick up and hone techniques quickly.

This is a trait of good cricketers and any coach will be impressed by a player who has learned from their coaching sessions (frankly, it's good for the coaches ego).

So take time to do the right kind of athletic development and strength training as it pays off many times over when you get the call.

And speaking of the right kind of training, Dr Laurence Houghton always says that the players who stretch are the ones who are the most committed to self improvement. So it also shows a little of your personality to the coach.

Making a jump up in levels is about far more than your ability to score runs or take wickets, especially early on when you are a junior player and still learning. However, if you take the right approach you will be given more chances to score those runs and take those wickets.

Good luck and let all of us at PitchVision Academy know how you get on.

John's Jobs: Window Washer

It's a job where you can't be afraid of heights, requires strong hands?& arms and relies on nice weather.

The Valley Today's John Trierweiler spent a day cleaning the windows at Essentia Health in Fargo, with A&B Window Cleaning.

A&B cleans?about 2,400 pieces of glass once a year at Essentia. A job that size takes them about three?days to?finish and there's a lot more to window cleaning than you think.

AJ Hampson,?showed us the?ropes, literally. Introducing us to the bosun's?chair, which allows?him to be more agile.?

"As opposed to scaffolding there's a lot more gear involved and all we do is we're harnessed in and second we strap into this chair," Hampson said.?

Of course strapping into that?chair, getting hooked up and hopping over the top of?an eight story building isn't easy.? But, failure to wash windows and get rid of all that dirt and grim can decay the life span of a window like plaque decaying a tooth.?

"That's all a build up of exhausts and dirt it all gets baked into the glass and if these buildings are not maintained well then you're going to have to replace a lot of glass and that gets pretty spendy,"? Hampson said.

A&B?also?gets a unique perspective,?since they're the only ones who will?get up close to the side of the building.

They don't just wash the windows?but look for any areas of concern.?

"Are there any real loose ends is the building starting to shift to much where we're starting to get leaks that's the kind of company we are where we keep track of that for our boss," Hampson said.

When asked, how John did washing the windows on the side of Essentia, the team at A&B was very impressed.?

Hampson told him, "They turned out great your first couple windows ever, I was impressed. You're welcome to join the team anytime."

Boy rescued from Ind. sand dune moving arms, legs

CHICAGO (AP) ? A 6-year-old Illinois boy who was buried in 11 feet of sand for hours at a northern Indiana dune is expected to make a full neurological recovery, though he may have ongoing lung problems, a doctor who treated him said Monday.

Nathan Woessner is sedated and on a ventilator, but should be removed from it by the end of the week, said Dr. Tracy Koogler, medical director at the University of Chicago Medical Center's pediatric intensive care unit.

Nathan may be released from the hospital in 10 to 14 days, she said.

He's been in critical condition since Friday, when he was rescued after falling into a sinkhole and being buried in sand for about four hours. Nathan was climbing the Mount Baldy dune in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore with his father and two friends.

Nathan's grandfather, Don Reul of Galva, Ill., said the 8-year-old friend saw Nathan disappear into the sand. Nathan's father and his friend's father could hear him at first and tried to dig him out with their hands.

They stopped when Nathan kept sinking farther under the sand. Eventually, they couldn't hear him anymore, Reul said.

Reul, a pastor, said the family feared Nathan was dead when he was pulled out, until a cut on the boy's face began bleeding.

Then, Reul said, "hope began to bubble up in our family that Nathan's not gone."

Koogler said Nathan may suffer asthma or some other lung problems because he breathed in so much sand, but she was surprised that his lungs weren't more damaged.

"I believe he had to have had an air pocket down there," Koogler said, saying there is no other explanation for why he survived.

Nathan was taken out of sedation long enough to demonstrate that he can move his arms, legs, toes and fingers, Koogler said, and initial tests don't show any neurological damage.

In six months, "I hope he is acting like a normal 6- or 7-year-old," Koogler said.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: Director says he talked with Monteith day of death, he sounded happy
  • The Glee actor missed his checkout time, staff found him dead
  • Police rule out foul play
  • Monteith, 31, spent time in rehab this year

(CNN) -- Cory Monteith, who played heart throb Finn Hudson in the Fox hit "Glee," was found dead in a Vancouver, Canada, hotel room Saturday, police said. He was 31.

Vancouver police said the cause of death was not immediately apparent, but they ruled out foul play.

Medical examiners will conduct an autopsy Monday.

Monteith's body was discovered by staff members at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel after he missed his checkout time, acting Chief Constable Doug LePard told reporters.

Monteith apparently had several people over to his room at one point Friday night, but LePard said Monteith, who had checked in July 6, was seen on hotel surveillance video returning to his room in the early morning hours by himself.

The glue of Glee

Adam Shankman, who directed an episode for each of the past three seasons, told CNN's Poppy Harlow that he had talked to Monteith on Saturday morning. The actor said he wanted to come down to California to Jet Ski.

Shankman said Monteith was the glue of "Glee." He was always welcoming, whether it was to a guest director or a new cast member, Shankman said.

The actor knew all of his lines when filming began each time and would congratulate his fellow cast members when he thought they did well.

"He showed up every day and he was a delight," Shankman said.

'My heart is broken'

One of his castmates on "Glee," Mark Salling, tweeted a simple "no" after police held their news conference.

Celebrities react to Monteith's death

Dot-Marie Jones, who plays the football coach at the fictional William McKinley High tweeted: "I have no words! My heart is broken. Cory was not only a hell of a friend, he was one amazing man that I will hold close to my heart forever.

"I am blessed to have worked with him and love him so much! My heart is with his family and our whole Glee family! I love you all!"

Share your memories of Monteith

Offscreen, Monteith was dating co-star Lea Michele.

He was madly in love with her, Shankman said. "He felt like it had renewed his spirit."

Struggles with substance abuse

Monteith spent time in rehab this year, checking into a drug addiction treatment facility in late March.

He had been frank about his struggles with substance abuse, telling Parade magazine in 2011 that he began using drugs at 13, and by 19 went into rehab after his mother and friends intervened.

"I had several interactions with him yesterday where he said that he was doing amazing," Shankman said. "He even said I am feeling fantastic. I'm like everybody else, really devastated and confused by what happened."

Awards for show

Monteith had been on the musical comedy show since it began in 2009.

On the show, Monteith played the dim quarterback of the football team at the Ohio high school who is forced to join the glee club. After graduation, he comes back to town and helps direct a musical at the school.

In 2011, he won a Teen Choice Award for top actor in a comedy. The show's cast won a Screen Actors Guild Award for an ensemble in a comedy the previous year.

He was in three projects that are in post-production, according to the Internet Movie Database.

One of them was a movie entitled "All The Wrong Reasons," also starring Kevin Zegers.

"I've never lost a friend this close. This feels like a mistake," Zegers wrote.
