Diamond Head Shark Attack: Australia Surfer Fights Back, Loses Fingers (VIDEO)

A man surfing at Diamond Head, near Port Macquarie, Australia, lost two fingers and a suffered a bite to his thigh when he was attacked by what is believed to be a bull shark Friday.

The 29-year-old surfer was in the water amid a pod of dolphins when the shark attacked, Adam Clarke, who witnessed the attack, told NBC News.

A spokeswoman for Surf Life Saving told the Sydney Morning Herald that the surfer, whose name has not been released, was riding a stand-up paddle board when he was bit on the thigh.

"The thigh wound didn't lose any flesh - it was a serious slash rather than a chunk of flesh being bitten out of him and the paramedics said it would be able to be stitched up," Senior Constable Chris Rowley from Laurieton police told the Herald Sun.

Witnesses said the man used his board to fight off the attacking shark, but had his fingers chewed off in the process.

According to local media, fellow surfers used their board ropes as a tourniquet to stop the man from bleeding out on the beach. That quick thinking may have saved his life.

"All his friends did a marvellous job. His fellow surfers and his friends here on the beach, they really did save his life until we got here. They did well," paramedic Ian Spencer told the Telegraph U.K.

The man was airlifted by helicopter to an area hospital about 175 miles away. He is in stable condition.

neesonthewlis: Health & Fitness Solutions: Self-Hypnosis ...

By Mamie Nanez

It's important that you become familiar with the field of hypnosis - especially self-hypnosis - and one of the best ways to do so is to start by reading shorter reports like this one to begin your knowledge base. Delve into the subject wholeheartedly and you will find that it doesn't take long to get a well-rounded grasp of what hypnosis is all about. Hypnosis is not a difficult subject to comprehend as there's really nothing complicated about it. The same holds true for self-hypnosis.

Since we are all so different, you may find the need to use self-hypnosis many times. The important thing is not how many times you need to use a particular script for some particular goal. The only thing that counts is that you are triumphant with it and get to the target you had in the first place. There is no way to know how you will respond to self-hypnosis until you try it out. An additional point that is critical is that it takes many applications to get to the phase where your endeavours are really valuable. You will more than likely not have the greatest execution at the start and you will not be entirely at ease with the procedure.

For a self-hypnosis session to be effective, you have to choose a place that is quiet. Try to remove all distractions from the place before commencing a session.

Creating your own personal space to practice your self-hypnosis is a good thing to do. Your ideal scenario could be in a cool, low-lit room with candles and incense.

Once you have decided to use self-hypnosis, you need to make a commitment. Unless you are fully committed and have confidence it will not work for you. It is imperative that you have conviction and believe the necessary things that need to change will. Hopefully you already have a good idea of the impact that faith and conviction have for favourable results. The whole concept of hypnosis, whether it is done by a therapist or by ones self, is up for disbelief by many. There are folks that have been assisted with the use of hypnosis throughout time and in many instances.

Every script to write and design needs to be exquisite for each hypnosis session. Consider that you are trying to reach your unconscious mind directly. That means you have to bypass your ordinary consciousness that looks at the world in a critical manner. So you have to know exactly how to use the right words that will be the most effective. You can buy self-hypnosis tapes or even buy scripts from hypnotherapists. A licensed trained hypnotherapist should be where this material comes from. They are governed by hypnosis organizations that will make sure they are on the straight and narrow. Your local area, and certainly the Internet, will have people you can talk to. In conclusion, there are many other self-hypnosis tips that are available. You can learn them if you want. Just be sure you are getting quality information from the web. Building a website, and populating it with information, is very easy to do - this is why you need to be careful with the info that you find.

OUYA ships 1,200 developer consoles, opens dev portal

Begone, doubters. OUYA -- the Android-based game console that shattered about 16 Kickstarter records -- has shipped to developers. Some 1,200 of them have shipped to developers. And it's important to stress that these are for developers. (Did we mention anything about developers here? Because we really should.) As you can see in the video above -- and can the same people who "boxed" a device be the ones to do an unboxing video? -- these are limited-edition devices, with transparent plastic and bugs and other things that are going to be completely reworked before production units ship in the spring.

What this milestone represents, of course, is a major step forward for a project funded by regular folks -- you and me -- through Kickstarter, meaning it's kind of a crapshoot as to what we'll actually get, when we'll get it, and how good it'll be when it hits our doorstep. (And full disclosure here: Android Central backed OUYA at the $1,337 level, so we've got one of these dev units on the way.) There won't be any apps on this dev version, but the egg has to come before the chicken. Or maybe it's the other way around.

In other news, OUYA has fired up its developer portal, where you can download the developer kit, upload games and get things ready for launch in a few months. Huzzah!

Chuck Hagel: Why his candidacy for Defense post is losing altitude

Critics of Chuck Hagel's potential candidacy have focused on remarks he made years ago about Israel, Iran, and Hamas. Some even called him anti-Semitic, a charge branded as outrageous, even by other critics.

By Anna Mulrine,?Staff writer / December 27, 2012

Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) leaves a news conference in Omaha, Nebraska in 2007. President Barack Obama is expected to announce his nominees for secretaries of state and defense soon, with former Republican senator had been Hagel on the short list of potential choices to head the Pentagon.

President Obama?s potential nomination of Chuck Hagel, a former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska, to be his next secretary of Defense is now being dubbed ?flailing? before it was even confirmed.

Much of the discussion, and the principal source of Mr. Hagel's vulnerability, revolves around remarks he made, some dating back several years, on US policy toward Israel, Iran, and Hamas. Some critics are wondering aloud whether he is sufficiently supportive of Israel, while others are even going so far as to suggest he is anti-Semitic, a charge that Hagel?s defenders, and even some of his detractors, have branded as outrageous.

At issue in particular is Hagel?s use, in a 2006 interview, of the descriptor ?Jewish lobby? to refer to the pro-Israel lobby in Washington, which includes US Christians, too, and which Hagel accused of ?intimidating a lot of people.?

These comments, along with Hagel?s support of dialogue with Iran and Hamas, both sworn enemies of Israel, prompted an unnamed Republican Senate aid, quoted in the conservative Weekly Standard, to promise of the potential nominee, ?Send us Hagel and we will make sure every American knows he is an anti-Semite.?

On Wednesday these charges were met by a published letter from four former US national security advisers, who wrote to ?strongly object, as a matter of substance and as a matter of principle, to the attacks on the character? of Hagel, noting that such treatment will ?only discourage future prospective nominees from public service when our country badly needs quality leadership in government.?

Those sentiments aside, Hagel?s former colleagues in the Senate are not exactly rushing to his defense. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who in 2008, as the Republican presidential nominee, said there might be a place for Hagel in his own administration, recently expressed reservations about Hagel?s candidacy for the Defense post, calling his remarks about the Israel lobby ?inappropriate.?

"There's no such thing as a Jewish lobby," McCain said when asked about Hagel?s comments. "There's an Armenian lobby, there's not a Jewish lobby. There's an Israeli lobby. It's called AIPAC, very influential."

In Hagel?s defense, meanwhile, some Jewish supporters ?have begun to step forward to call the anti-Semitic label not just unfair, but slanderous.

?He?s one of the most experienced and knowledgeable people in American policy today when it comes to national security matters, and I think the president would be very well-served by a veteran with a deep grasp of both the potential and the limitations of military power,? says Jeremy Ben-Ami, President of J Street, a pro-Israel liberal Jewish lobby group.

?The notion that Chuck Hagel is anti-Israel is ludicrous. The notion that he is anti-Semitic is slanderous. He may have used one poor choice of words, but that doesn?t make someone subject to these labels,? Mr. Ben-Ami adds.?

?He has a several decade career of votes and writings and statements that as a whole demonstrate the commitment that he has to Israel.?

That commitment is not, Hagel himself has noted, unconditional. "I'm a United States senator. I support Israel,? he said in the 2006 interview. ?But my first interest is I take an oath of office to the Constitution of the United States. Not to a president. Not a party. Not to Israel. If I go run for Senate in Israel, I'll do that." ?

Project part of PCORI's effort to help patients make better-informed health decisions

CLEVELAND, OHIO Case Western Reserve University has been approved for a research award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to study ways that applying patients' strengths can help enhance their health care and well-being. The project is part of a portfolio of patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research that addresses PCORI's National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda.

Kurt C. Stange, MD, PhD, Professor of Family Medicine & Community Health at the School of Medicine will lead the research project, which departs from the typical care model focusing on patient challenges or weaknesses. Instead, researchers will explore how patient strengths can be integrated into assessment and treatment to improve patient outcomes. Strengths could include a patient's resilience or mindfulness, as well as relationships with family and friends and resources available within the community.

Case Western Reserve researchers will work with patients and clinicians in the Safety Net Providers' Strategic Alliancea Cleveland-area consortium (known formally as a Practice-Based Research Network) involving 17 community health centers and two free clinics. The project team also includes collaborators at the University of Oslo in Norway and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who will help develop an interactive online tool to assess patient strengths. The researchers will create computerized simulation models to compare outcomes from employing patient-identified strengths to deficit and symptom-focused care.

"Today marks a major milestone in our work as we build a portfolio of comparative clinical effectiveness research that will provide patients and those who care for them better information about the health care decisions they face," said PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH. "These research projects reflect PCORI's patient-centered research agenda, emphasizing the inclusion of patients and caregivers at all stages of the research."

PCORI is committing $40.7 million in funding for a slate of 25 projects, which were approved by PCORI's Board of Governors following a competitive, multi-stage review process involving scientists, patients, caregivers and other stakeholders. Proposals were evaluated on the basis of scientific merit, engagement of patients and stakeholders, methodological rigor and fit within PCORI's National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda.

The awards were part of PCORI's first cycle of primary research funding and selected from among nearly 500 completed applications submitted earlier this year. All proposals were approved pending a business and programmatic review by PCORI staff and completion of a formal award contract. The amount of the award will be finalized after that process.

"This award will allow us to work with community and university partners to develop and evaluate an approach that brings patients' often untapped personal, family and community strengths into the process of health care, healing and health promotion," Stange said. "Instead of the usual approach of focusing primarily on deficits, this model has the potential to give patients and their partners a more fully informed and empowered role in advancing their well-being."

Officials: NY gunman set 'trap' for firefighters

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) ? A man who set his house on fire then lured firefighters to their deaths in a blaze of flames and bullets had attracted little attention since he got out of prison in the 1990s for killing his grandmother, authorities said.

But two months ago, William Spengler's mother died, leaving the 62-year-old ex-con in a Lake Ontario house with his sister, who he "couldn't stand," a friend said.

Spengler set a car and a house in his neighborhood ablaze early Monday, luring firefighters to the neighborhood and then killed two, wounded two others and injured a police officer while several homes burned around him, police said. Spengler then killed himself. His sister, Cheryl, was missing.

About 100 people attended an impromptu memorial vigil Monday evening in Webster, a suburb of Rochester. Dozens of bouquets were left at the fire station, along with a handwritten sign that said, "Thanks for protecting us. RIP."

Spengler, had been living in the home in Webster, a suburb of Rochester, with his mother and sister since his parole in 1998. He had served 17 years in prison after the beating death of his 92-year-old grandmother in 1980, for which he had originally been charged with murder but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter. His mother, Arline, died in October.

On Monday, Spengler fired at the four firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze, town police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first police officer who arrived chased the gunman and exchanged shots.

Spengler lay in wait outdoors for the firefighters' arrival, then opened fire probably with a rifle and from atop an earthen berm, Pickering said. "It does appear it was a trap," he said.

Authorities used an armored vehicle to help residents flee dozens of homes on the shore of Lake Ontario a day before Christmas. Police restricted access to the neighborhood, and officials said it was unclear whether there were other bodies in the seven houses left to burn.

Authorities said Spengler hadn't done anything to bring himself to their attention since his parole. As a convicted felon, he wasn't allowed to possess weapons. Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said Spengler led a very quiet life after he got out of prison.

A friend said Spengler hated his sister. Roger Vercruysse lived next door to Spengler and recalled a man who doted on his mother, whose obituary suggested contributions to the West Webster Fire Department.

"He loved his mama to death," said Vercruysse, who last saw his friend about six months ago.

Vercruysse also said Spengler "couldn't stand his sister" and "stayed on one side of the house and she stayed on the other."

The West Webster Fire District learned of the fire early Monday after a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn said.

The fire appeared from a distance as a pulsating ball of flame glowing against the early morning sky, flames licking into treetops and reflecting on the water, with huge bursts of smoke billowing away in a brisk wind.

Emergency radio communications capture someone saying he "could see the muzzle flash coming at me" as Spengler carried out his ambush. The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com has someone reporting "firefighters are down" and saying "got to be rifle or shotgun - high powered ... semi or fully auto."

Two of the firefighters arrived on a fire engine and two in their own vehicles, Pickering said. After Spengler fired, one of the wounded men fled, but the other three couldn't because of flying gunfire.

The police officer who exchanged gunfire with Spengler "in all likelihood saved many lives," Pickering said.

A police armored vehicle was used to recover two men, and eventually it removed 33 people from nearby homes, the police chief said. The gunfire initially kept firefighters from battling the blazes.

The dead men were identified as police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, the Webster Police Department's public information officer; and 19-year-old Tomasz Kaczowka, also a 911 dispatcher.

Pickering described Chiapperini as a "lifetime firefighter" with nearly 20 years in the department, and he called Kaczowka a "tremendous young man."

Kaczowka's brother, reached at the family home Monday night, said he didn't want to talk.

The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were in guarded condition in the intensive care unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, authorities said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.

Hofstetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.

At West Webster Fire Station 1, there were at least 20 bouquets on a bench in front and a bouquet of roses with three gold-and-white ribbons saying, "May they rest in peace," ''In the line of duty" and "In memory of our fallen brothers."

A handwritten sign says, "Thanks for protecting us, RIP." Two candles were lit to honor the dead.

Grieving firefighters declined to talk to reporters. At an impromptu memorial vigil Monday evening, about 100 people stood in the cold night air, some holding candles. A fire department spokesman made a brief appearance, thanked them all and told them to go home and appreciate their families.

Cathy Bartlett was there with her teenage son, who was good friends with Kaczowka. Bartlett's husband, Mark Bartlett, has been a firefighter there for 25 years but missed the call this morning.

"Thank God my husband slept through the first alarm and didn't get up until the second one went off," she said.

The shooting and fires were in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes set close together across the road from the lakeshore. The area is popular with recreational boaters but is normally quiet this time of year.

"We have very few calls for service in that location," Pickering said. "Webster is a tremendous community. We are a safe community, and to have a tragedy befall us like this is just horrendous."

O'Flynn lamented the violence, which comes on the heels of other shootings including the massacre of 20 students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"It's sad to see that this is becoming more commonplace in communities across the nation," O'Flynn said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the State Police and Office of Emergency Management were working with local authorities.

"Volunteer firefighters and police officers were injured and two were taken from us as they once again answered the call of duty," Cuomo said in a statement. "We as the community of New York mourn their loss as now two more families must spend the holidays without their loved ones."

Webster, a middle-class suburb, now is the scene of violence linked to house fires for two Decembers in a row.

Last Dec. 7, authorities say, a 15-year-old boy doused his home with gasoline and set it ablaze, killing his father and two brothers, 16 and 12. His mother and 13-year-old sister escaped with injuries. He is being prosecuted as an adult.

Local Family Spends Holiday Volunteering - Back to Home

The holidays aren't joyous for everyone. Especially when you don't have a roof over your head or food in your stomach.

The holidays are a time most people spend with loved ones. But one family is spending it helping those in need.

Dick Pariset and his family celebrated Christmas with a few extra people this year. But they weren't at home. They were at Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach, preparing and serving a holiday meal to those who normally wouldn't have one.

"It makes you feel pretty good. These folks have a really nice meal, an abundance of food. I'm a farmer, so what would be better than helping people eat a nice meal," Pariset said.

Dick, his wife Jerry, and their daughter, son-in-law and grandson from Colorado spent Tuesday scooping steaming potatoes and ham for someone other than themselves. They say they feel lucky to have gotten the opportunity.

"Generally on Christmas day, they have a bunch of people who that's just their day to volunteer. They said 'man that would be wonderful, because we could be with our family for a change,'" Pariset said.

Volunteering runs in the family. Jerry Pariset helps out at Matt Talbot every week and 13-year-old Dominic isn't new to the organization either. It's the second time he's joined his grandparents there.

"It's something you can do for somebody else. Christmas is the perfect time to do that," Pariset said.

The Matt Talbot Kitchen made enough food to serve about 150 people. Surprisingly, they say the holidays aren't their busiest season.

Matt Talbot staff say they had so many volunteers they had to turn some away. They just hope the volunteering spirit lasts all year.

A poem on Intrinsic Motivation and Continuous Continuous ...

I stated playing with some of the Square Wheels cartoons and doing some short poems over the past week or so. I guess it is kind of like taking a break, but I am also playing with my creative thinking and the like. Doing these ?poems? has been fun, but will certainly not win me any awards!

One of the best of the cartoons in my series has always been one that I call, ?Intrinsic Motivation,? since it seems to capture so much about improvement and self-generated motivation to succeed. As I played with this in workshops and generated a lot of conversations and comments, what stands out is the reality that implementing your ideas generates a lot of the right stuff. Ideas and themes about intrinsic motivation might include:

 • Making things work more smoothly, better or faster
 • Taking Pride in one?s accomplishments
 • Succeeding in the challenge of putting a round wheel on the wagon, probably not with a lot of support from the leadership
 • Doing something good even though it may not get noticed by others
 • Doing something for the right reason and for the Big Picture
 • Simply feeling good about oneself when you succeed at something you challenged yourself to do
 • Feeling positive about making an improvement that impacts others or that may lead to other impacts on people and an organization
 • Using a new idea successfully

The list actually goes on and on, but the above tend to be the main frames for why implementing a Round Wheel in a world full of Square Wheels is simply a good thing to do. Questions are often along the lines of, ?Will that one wheel actually make any difference or be noticeable?? and my reactions have been along the lines of making any improvement is a positive action and while one wheel may make little overall impact, implementing the first one is a lot harder than implementing the second or the third.

One begins to change the culture, just a little, by having a success and feeling that you made a difference. Will the leadership know? Maybe not. Should they know? Of course. And they may figure out something has changed positively, eventually. Maybe it will simply take another person at the back of the wagon to do the same thing on the other side?

But making a difference IS making a difference. It has to start somewhere?

Thus, my little poem:

Intrinsic better and better poem

Innovation can occur anywhere, and implementing innovations is critical to long-term success for most organizations and workplaces. Improvements can be little things or big things, but building a culture willing to try to do something differently will have a variety of positive benefits. Consider the culture where any change or any improvement is not supported. Yeah, that can look something like this:

No Headway poem rat cageor this one:

Big Foot Smush

If we want to motivate people, we need to ask for their ideas and generate their engagement and involvement in workplace innovation. Just bring in ?workers? to do the same constrained job, day after day, will get you what we seem to have already gotten in so many workplaces, the dis-engaged and the un-involved.

There are LOTS of ways to do things differently.

Pyramids 3D

Pyramids 3D ($13.99) is a multimedia journey into some of the most renowned and magnificent structures of the ancient world, the Pyramids, Sphinx, and tombs at Giza, Egypt. With this beautifully designed app, users can read about early Egyptian history, examine 3D-rendered artifacts, and even take virtual journeys into the Pyramids and tombs while a narrator explains what they are seeing. This fun and informative app offers content that will be of interest to anyone from curious youngsters to budding Egyptologists to armchair explorers.

Exploration
When you first open the app, you are treated to a 3D aerial tour of the Great Pyramids, Sphinx tombs, lesser pyramids, and other structures on the Giza plateau. You come to rest, hovering high above the pyramids. By clicking on a pyramid or a tomb, you are transported to it and given the option to enter the structure. (You can also navigate to the various structures from a pull-down menu atop the screen.) When you do so, you are transported along corridors within the building, where you can visit various chambers. If you press Audio Intro, a voice will describe what you are seeing.? Moving your finger across your iPad?s touch screen will let you get a 360-degree view of the chamber or other location.

In the lower left corner of the screen are three buttons with icons: Places, Objects, and Book.

The Book section provides a good overview of Egyptian history from when the Nile valley was settled some 8,000 years ago through Greco-Roman times and including the more recent exploration and excavation of the tombs starting in the seventeenth century. It includes additional illustrations and artifacts, including basic cutaways of the pyramids as well as photos of the structures.

Experts
Anyone who?s watched specials on Egyptology in recent years will be familiar with archaeologist Zawi Hawass, secretary general of Egypt?s Supreme Council of Antiquities. Dr. Hawass wrote the text for this app, as well as selecting the 40 artifacts that appear in the Objects section. They were rendered in 3D by Sandro Vannini and his team, which also spent thousands of hours photographing Giza?s monuments.

Artifacts
The artifacts are largely statues, but also include an urn, a knife, and hieroglyph-covered palettes. There?s also the reconstruction of a boat?found near the Great Pyramid?that had been dismantled into more than 1,200 pieces of wood. It?s known as the Solar Boat, as it is believed to have been built to carry the deceased pharaoh Khufu on his afterlife journey through the sky with the sun god Ra. The centerpiece, though, is the exquisite 3D rendering of the golden funeral mask of King Tutankhamun.

Pyramids 3D shares the solid content and exquisite photography and production of another Touch Press ebook, the Editors? Choice app The Elements: A 3D Exploration (5 stars, $13.99). There are more in-depth books on Egyptology, but Pyramids 3D is a very good overview, and provides a fun and educational multimedia look at some of the grandest structures ever built.

How-To Write Your Own Killer Cover Letter HR, Recruiting, Social ...

There you are. Sitting in your chair, reading the headline of this blog post, wondering ? ?Really, do I even need a cover letter anymore?? And, the short answer is: Sometimes. There are some hiring managers that still want to read cover letters and require them as part of the screening process. You see, many people get assistance in writing their resumes, but the cover letter is often left up to the job seeker to write. Unassisted.

Cover letters give the reader insight into your personality, achievements and writing skills. So, just like your resume, be sure that your cover letter is free of grammatical errors. Here are a few other tips for writing your own killer cover letter.

COVER LETTER TIPS FROM AN HR PRO

When possible, address your cover letter to an actual person, then begin with a strong opening statement that demonstrates your interest in a specific job. I also like when candidates tell me where they saw the job posting, as it helps me gauge the ROI on advertising sources.

Dear Ms. Smith:

When I read ABC?s posting for a Human Resources Business Partner on LinkedIn, my interest was immediately sparked.

The cover letter is a great place to highlight some of your significant career accomplishments. Can you name three to five things that make you an awesome candidate? Good. Include them on your cover letter. Entice the hiring manager (or recruiter / HR generalist) to want to read more.

As a motivated human resources professional with more than XX years of experience working at DEFG Co., I contributed to the company?s success by:

 • Really significant accomplishment

 • Quantifiable career highlight

 • Huge project that put your name on the map

 • Major kudos received for doing this

Since you are essentially selling a company on why to choose you, your cover letter and resume become your most important marketing tools. Like any pitch, you want to close strong.

During my last review, the vice president referred to me as ?a key member of the DEFG team ? that delivers results and builds cohesion along the way.? As you can see from my background, I have the experience you are looking for in an HR Business Partner. In addition, I am very interested in becoming a key member of the ABC team and in speaking with you further. I can be reached at 301.XXX.XXXX.

A FEW OTHER QUICK TIPS ON COVER LETTER WRITING

1. Keep it short and sweet. No one wants or has time to read through a novella.
2. Include your heading at the top, similar to the one you use on your resume.
3. Read over it aloud a few times to ensure everything reads well.
4. Proofread it again and again; don?t rely on spell check to pick up all errors.

Have any other cover letter tips? Feel free to share them below.

Movie review: 'Les Mis?rables' | Advocate Magazine

Movie review: Les Mis?rables

Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean.

Tom Hooper?s (The King?s Speech) extravagant movie adaptation of the long-running musical version of Victor Hugo?s tale of the haves and the have-nots, is systematically big, loud, splashy, and melodramatic ? exactly what it should be, all things considered. Boasting big-budget opulence and a star-studded cast, it doesn?t radically re-interpret Les Mis?rables, but it does take advantage of some of the dramatic opportunities only cinema can provide.

Hooper keeps his camera active, often shooting in close-up and long takes, and the sprawling CGI-rendered cityscapes of a 19th-century Paris give an epic scope beyond that of the stage. However, it?s Hooper?s decision to have his actors sing live on camera (opposed to the standard lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks) that brings emotion and intimacy to the movie.

For many of us, that means a chance to finally see Broadway veteran Hugh Jackman let loose his vocal talents, and as the heroic ex-con turned benevolent father-figure Jean Valjean, and he easily dominates the film. Anne Hathaway also scores points with her raw performance as the ill-fated Fantine, especially during the usually moribund number ?I Dreamed a Dream?. Many of the youngsters also deliver, especially Samantha Barks as Eponine and Eddie Redmayne as Marius, who squarely nails ?Red and Black?. Sadly, it?s all in the service of overwrought melodrama amplified by being transferred from stage to screen.

Movie review: Les Mis?rables

Russell Crowe stars as Captain Crunch in ?Les Miserables?.

?

?

Poor Russell Crowe, on the other hand, fares less well as the implacable Inspector Javert who relentlessly hunts Valjean like an Gallic Terminator. Granted, Crowe has sung in bands for years, but he?s fighting above his weight level here; Les Mis?rables is basically an opera, and Crowe is unsuited for the rigors of near-constant singing. He seems stiff, his voice is often flat, and he sometimes looks like he?s battling stage fright. It?s a bummer, because it?s the sort of role he would have nailed dead in a standard production, and it?s a missed-opportunity for playing him against Jackman.

Still, he comes across better than Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham-Carter, who ham it up big-time in the already hammy roles of the odious thieving innkeepers Monsieur and Madame Thenardier. They play the parts in broad and garish strokes, but the humor falls flat; if you couldn?t tolerate them in Sweeney Todd, you won?t find much to like here.

Hooper seems overcome by Les Miz?s lack of subtlety, or perhaps he just felt obliged to run with it. True, it?s always been a three-boxes-of-tissues tearjerker, but Hooper seems to go out of his way to hammer the point home, ignoring that in movie theaters there are no rafters that need playing to and shooting every single aria with the emotional volume cranked up to 11. It works during Hathaway?s aforementioned solo and Barks? performance of ?On My Own?; the rest of the time it amounts to an aural mugging.

Helping Women Business Owners Access Capital - Small Business ...

women owned business financingWomen-owned businesses are one of the fastest growing segments of the small business community. Today, about 30% of small businesses are owned by women, compared to about 5% in 1970. This is good news.

However, women business owners still face several challenges when it comes to growing their businesses and accessing capital.

According to the latest data:

 • Only 3 percent of all women-owned firms?have revenues of $1 million or more?compared with 6%?of men-owned firms. (Center for Women?s Business Research)
 • Women-owned firms with revenues of $1 million or more are more likely to access commercial loans or lines of credit than other women-owned firms (70% vs. 28%). Despite the success of larger women-owned businesses, they continue to lag behind their male counterparts in using commercial credit (56% of women vs. 71% of men). Larger, faster-growing women-owned firms are more likely than other firms owned by women to use credit. (Women Impacting Public Policy ? WIPP)
 • Of the WIPP women business members who sought outside funding in 2011, only 45% of businesses were successful after two attempts.

Access to growth capital is a critical factor in growing a successful business. However, as the statistics show, even when women business owners seek financing, they don?t always get it. Critical factors to ensuring that women get the funding they need often comes down to awareness and education:

 • What funding sources are available?
 • What is the process of securing capital?
 • Who can help?

While there aren?t any specific loan programs for women business owners, there are a number of government-backed and business loans that women business owners can take advantage of and resources in your community to help you secure them. Here are two worth getting to know:

Women?s Business Centers

With a nationwide network of more than 110 offices, Women?s Business Centers (WBCs) operate with the mission to ?level the playing field? for women entrepreneurs, who still face unique obstacles in the world of business.

Specifically, they can help guide women through the process of finding and applying for loans, guidance on how to bid on government contracts and offer regular training seminars on financing topics. Some also provide access to alternative capital financing programs.

FACT:?Government data proves that businesses that receive assistance from WBCs have significantly better survival rates than those that don?t receive similar support.

Women Accessing Capital Program

Another resource for women business owners is the Women Impacting Public Policy?s Women Accessing Capital program. The national program is designed to educate women business owners on all steps of accessing capital, from understanding and evaluating funding sources, creating a strong application for capital, to maintaining and managing growth.

Specifically, program participants get information that can be immediately applied to advancing their businesses. Look out for events, webinars and courses that provide the necessary tools to competitively seek the appropriate type of funding, obtain much needed cash, and then manage a financed firm, to help small business owners take their businesses to the next level.

Check out the events calendar on the main WIPP site for upcoming activities.

How to Create a Nautical Theme in Your Interiors

?Entry #1951, December 21, 2012

A marine-themed abode certainly creates that delightful nautical feel, regardless of where your home is. You can live hundreds of miles away from the oceanfront and still enjoy the oceanic ambiance. Follow these simple tips to create a home that reminds you of the refreshing seacoast.

nautical interiors ideas

Create an inspiring interior with nautical decor

Image via: Zero Energy

Choosing the Tones

Color schemes are foundation to any theme. Walls with cool hues such as blues and greens along with whites and neutrals work perfectly for the nautical home background. Pale tones create a more airy feel to the interiors, whereas vivid shades are ideal for creating a warmer setting. Reds and oranges are best reserved for small-sized adornments. Yellow is preferable for large accessories.

Make it More Realistic

For the seafaring backdrop, wood is preferred for cabinets, desks, bed frames, and tables. Furniture displaying the original wooden surface gives a rustic appearance. You can also paint furniture blue, green, or white if you prefer. Opt for the traditional white and blue-striped upholstery on sofas and beach chairs to instantly amplify the nautical ambiance. Throw in yellow cushions and rugs to balance the color scheme.

Give the Final Touches

Adorn the space with beautiful oceanic decor. Some ideas include beach pebbles in shallow bowls; an active fish tank; a few red or orange starfish on the mantelpiece; a boat anchor wall hanging; framed images of rural dockyards, seagulls, or aquatic life; and other pieces of accessories that reminds you of the sea.

Finally, step back and breathe in the freshness of the sea right inside your home. Quench your longing for the marine air by creating an inviting nautical home away from the ocean
