In the current console gaming market there are three titans: Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. The big three have dominated the game market long enough that young gamers can be forgiven for being unaware it was ever different. Nearly three decades ago when the console market was just starting to gain traction, it was a different story?Sega and Nintendo were locked in a binary opposition where each company raced to outdo the other and there was little outside competition.
Part of this video-games-arms-race involved Nintendo entering into a business collaboration with music and technology giant Sony. The goal of the collaboration was to create a CD-ROM expansion system for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). To this end Sony appointed Ken Kutaragi, a prominent hardware engineer, to build the gaming system. The project moved along to such a point that, at the Consumer Electronics Show in 1991, Sony gave a demonstration of an SNES unit with a CD-ROM expansion that played media-rich game content using the Green Book/CDi format.
The very next day Nintendo called off the deal with Sony, allegedly over disagreements about how profits would be shared between the two companies, and went directly to Philips to continue the project. Having invested years into the partnership and development of the project Sony executives were understandably enraged by the about-face move. In response, Sony President Norio Ohga put Ken Kutaragi in charge of continuing the development of the project into a wholly Sony owned and directed game console.
Sony released the original PlayStation in December of 1994. It went on to sell 102 million units and was the first game console to break the 100 million unit mark. Nintendo didn?t get around to releasing a disc-based console until the GameCube in 2001. The Game Cube sold a total of 21 million units.
For decades, scientists have thought that one of the big differences between men and women is that men can make children all their lives because men never stop making sperm. But scientific dogma said women aren't so lucky when it comes to their eggs.
"The traditional belief in the field has been that when a baby girl is born, she is given a bank account of eggs, and that bank cannot be added to, only withdrawn from," said Jonathan Tilly, a researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.
In 2004, Tilly shocked the scientific world when he claimed he had found primitive "stem" cells hiding in the ovaries of adult female mice that could generate new eggs. That raised the possibility that it might be true for women as well.
"The implications at the time were enormous," Tilly said.

But that claim was challenged by other scientists. And Tilly had only found the cells in mice. No one knew whether humans had them, too.
In a series of experiments being published in the March issue of the journal Nature Medicine, Tilly and his colleagues say they have proved young adult women have the same cells.
"What this means is that little bank account of eggs that a little girl gets at birth is in fact open to continued deposits," Tilly said.
Here's what Tilly and his colleagues did: First, they got some ovarian tissue from young women. Then they isolated cells that appeared identical to the ones they had found in mice. Next, they say, they showed that the cells can develop into eggs in a dish in the laboratory.
"Right before our eyes, in culture dishes, we were watching that process happen for the first time," Tilly said.
The researchers then injected the cells back into human ovarian tissue to see if they would turn into eggs on their own. To make sure they were looking at the right cells, the scientists genetically engineered them to glow green. The cells started turning into eggs ? and even formed crucial structures called follicles, the researchers report.
"It is those follicle structures that are key to maturing that egg cell to the point where it becomes able to accept sperm and produce an embryo," he said.
The implications of all of this are potentially enormous. It could eventually help restore fertility in women who have become infertile for a variety of reasons, including chemotherapy, early menopause or just normal aging.
"This work is highly significant," said Kutluk Oktay, an infertility specialist at New York Medical College. "If this could be turned into clinical applications, menopause may not exist as we know it."
Others remain skeptical. Much more research is needed to confirm Tilly's claims and to understand what's really going on, they said.
"I don't see this as really being applicable in the near future in the treatment of infertility," said David Albertini of the University of Kansas. "That would be pie in the sky."
Not everyone thinks the focus on enabling women to have children late in life is necessarily a good idea.
"What are we creating as a world? We're creating as a world one in which it's increasingly hard for people to have children when they're young, and then saying, 'But wait, we have solutions, technology ? we can do it when you're older,' " said Barbara Katz Rothman, a sociologist at the City University of New York. "And that's the part that disturbs me."
She argues that society should instead make it easier for women to balance school, work and parenting when they're younger.
For his part, Tilly is focusing on the next step. He's working with colleagues in Britain to try to fertilize eggs made from these cells to prove they can make an embryo that someday could be implanted into a woman's womb.

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory's European Bioinformatics Institute has launched the Enzyme Portal, a freely available resource for people who are interested in the biology of enzymes and proteins with enzymatic activity.
Enzymes catalyse the myriad reactions that take place in living organisms, allowing chemical changes to occur that would otherwise need conditions that are incompatible with life. Until now, information about enzymes was scattered throughout many different resources. This meant that you had to know exactly what you were looking for, which could be a real barrier to discovery.
The Enzyme Portal mines and displays data about proteins with enzymatic activity from public repositories via a single search, and includes biochemical reactions, biological pathways, small molecule chemistry, disease information, 3D protein structures and relevant scientific literature. It summarises information in the UniProt knowledge base; the Protein Data Bank in Europe; Rhea, a database of enzyme-catalysed reactions; Reactome, a database of biochemical pathways; IntEnz, a resource with enzyme nomenclature information; ChEBI and ChEMBL, which contain information about small-molecule chemistry and bioactivity; and CoFactor and MACIE for highly detailed, curated information about cofactors and reaction mechanisms.
The Enzyme Portal covers a large number of species, including the key organisms used in biological research, and makes it simple to compare the characteristics of equivalent enzyme activities in different organisms.
"The Enzyme Portal will serve researchers interested in the native metabolism of organisms as well as those working in drug discovery or chemical biology," explained Dr Christoph Steinbeck, Head of Cheminformatics and Metabolism at EMBL-EBI. "The resource seamlessly bridges the various enzyme-related aspects of these areas, all the way from the small molecules which may occur naturally in the organism of study or be introduced to the 3D structure of the enzymes affected and the genomic information coding for those."
The design of the Enzyme Portal was based entirely on user demand and feedback. "We didn't come in with preconceived ideas of what it should be; it was designed by users, for users," said Cheminformatics Coordinator Paula de Matos. "We had enough data, but it was distributed over 10 different resources. Now, we have a central place where they can access and explore all of it including information about disease."
"The Enzyme Portal takes the researcher's perspective," added User Experience Analyst Jenny Cham. "We leveraged user-testing feedback to create it, making it the first EMBL-EBI resource to have a fully user-centred design from scratch. This approach was not only cost-effective; it made decision making and communication much easier particularly in terms of design and technology choices."

Battlefieldo called for 24 hours of silence ? no playing, no server activity, no social media mentions. That?ll show ?em!
