Union beats RPI 3-2 in series opener

SCHENECTADY ? Greg Coburn?s power play goal at 1:43 of the second period proved to be the difference as Union College knocked off RPI, 3-2 in the opening game? of the best-of-3 ECAC quarterfinal playoff series at Messa Rink.

RPI?s Alex Angers-Goulet?s shorthanded goal at 10:32 of the third period cut the Union lead to 3-2 but the Dutchmen held on for the win.

Union held a 2-1 advantage after the first period following goals by Max Novak and Wayne Simpson, who scored on the power play at 13:19 of the first to break a 1-all tie.

RPI?s Matt Tinordi scored 42 seconds into the game to give RPI an early 1-0 lead.
