Strategic Planning is Everyone?s Business*

By Winslow Swart

Too often, business consultants will have a solution and then try to find a problem to fit it. ?In industries like technology, where many applications are standards-based, this can work fine. When it comes to strategic planning it?s called, ?prognosis without diagnosis.?

strategic planning

There are many approaches to strategic planning and thorough?assessment can determine which approach is best suited. In some cases, a hybrid solution of several ?best-practices? is required.

Why strategically plan? Strategic planning helps established companies stay competitive and new organizations build both the tangible and intangible components of their business plans, improving the chances for success.

Strategic planning engages organizations in a process that:

????????? declares a vision and goals for the future,

????????? ?identifies core mission and purpose,

????????? makes commitments and clarifies values that shape actions,

????????? creates a Strategic and Operational Framework for Vision and Goals

????????? lays the Critical Groundwork for Operational Planning and Implementation and

???????? establishes a timeline, performance objectives and the critical factors for success,

It is also an exercise in organizational soul-searching, surfacing the touchstones for value and quality thereby breathing life into a process that would otherwise lack the needed passion, commitment, and energy to succeed.

Traditionally the domain of a few executives or board members, strategic efforts that foster wider collaboration yield better results by harnessing the creativity and shared knowledge of many, versus just a few. Mayor Julian Castro launched SA2020, a strategic vision for San Antonio, asking everyone ?to dream, and dream big? in the spirit of inclusion and collaboration. The Mayor?s Chief of Staff, Robbie Greenblum reports, ?For Mayor Castro, the design of the SA2020 process was critical, the more people that would be involved?the more creative and intelligent minds from the community would be heard.? ?Thousands of San Antonians participated and together identified 11 Vision Areas for San Antonio?s future. ?We asked everyone where we want to be in 10 years, as a city?to think about creating our own destiny, versus allowing economic and social trends to decide who we would become? adds Greenblum.

?We wanted to know what everyone believed were the strengths of this city,? continued Greenblum, ?the values, the culture, the things people did not want to change.?? In terms of identifying the touchstones ? values and competitive strengths ? the process was right on the mark.

A prime example of a critical success factor is found in one of SA2020?s 11 vision areas ? education. Research showed that third grade reading competency is one of the greatest predictors of academic success and graduation rates.?? The mantra of SA2020 is, ?Dream It. Map It. Do It,? connecting the idea that strategic visions should also ignite a sense of mission, making implementation easier. Still, the challenge is in making the vision a reality. If the idea that ?people own what they create? holds true, then there is genuine hope that action will be taken.? A good first step is the thousands of mentoring hours (reading to third graders, etc.) by SA2020 corporate partner employees, non-profit group members and citizens dedicated to transforming this vision into action.

So far, SA2020 seems to be working out well for The City of San Antonio. Your own company?s situation is unique. When embarking on your organization?s vision quest, remember, strategic planning itself requires planning, and one size rarely fits all.

Knicks add former Hawks coach Woodson as assistant (AP)

NEW YORK ? Mike Woodson is coming to New York to help the Knicks' defense. Just don't call him a defensive specialist.

The Knicks hired the former Atlanta Hawks coach on Monday as an assistant to Mike D'Antoni, and both coaches insisted Woodson's focus won't be limited to one area.

"I'm not going to sit here and say that I'm just a defensive coach. I can help Mike, I think, offensively as well," Woodson said during a conference call. "I'm just a coach and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to come in and do that."

Woodson led the Hawks to three playoff berths in his six seasons in Atlanta, but was let go after they were swept in embarrassing fashion by Orlando in the 2010 Eastern Conference semifinals.

He interviewed for the Detroit job that instead went to Lawrence Frank and also was a candidate in Houston, but now will try to help D'Antoni address the Knicks' longtime struggles on the defensive end.

Yet D'Antoni also tried to downplay the notion of a "defensive specialist."

"I don't know where that came from, other than people writing about it. But he's a good coach," D'Antoni said. "We expect him to add in a very positive way: defensively, offensively, big guys, small guys. Whatever we need as the Knicks organization for him to do, he'll be able to do. He's an extremely talented coach."

Woodson began his pro playing career with the Knicks as the No. 12 pick in the 1980 NBA draft out of Indiana, where he played with former New York coach and president Isiah Thomas, and current general manager Glen Grunwald.

As an assistant to Larry Brown in Detroit, Woodson was credited with building the defense that helped the Pistons win the 2004 NBA championship. He was then hired in Atlanta, where he increased his win total every year from 13 in his first season to 53 in 2009-10. But the Hawks lost their four second-round games to the Magic by an average of 25.3 points, the most lopsided sweep in NBA history.

He gets back to work now with a Knicks team that has plenty of offense with Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups, but remains one of the league's poorest defensive clubs, ranking near the bottom in points per game allowed (105.7) and opponents' field goal percentage (47.2).

That's led to frequent calls that D'Antoni, whose strength has always been his offensive schemes, needed to hire a coach to address the defense. Though he said "we didn't need a voice," he added the Knicks were open to bringing someone in and decided after talking to a few of them that Woodson can have the "most impact on our team."

"He just fills the bill in a lot of areas," D'Antoni said. "But I think the biggest area is that he's a really good coach and really good guy, and very loyal, and those are the things that a head coach can't live without."

Especially one who is entering the last year of his contract. But D'Antoni and Woodson said that wasn't an issue because there were expectations with all coaching jobs.

Woodson said he can also offer input about offense, as well as help D'Antoni work with young players. He'd have preferred to be running a team again, but was glad for the chance to get back on the bench.

"I'm just a coach that's looking for an opportunity. I have experience and I'm just excited about the opportunity," Woodson said. "That's all a coach in this league can ask for."

Terms of Woodson's deal were not disclosed.

The saddest Republican candidacy of them all

The saddest Republican candidacy of them all

Reuters

George Pataki

There's a reason why George Pataki seems to be moving toward a presidential campaign, but "because Republicans want him to" is not it.

The word this week is that the former New York governor's entry into the GOP?race is imminent, and that he may use an event in Iowa this weekend to announce his plans. An official campaign website even went live for a brief period on Wednesday before being taken down. Not that we should be too surprised by all of this: Pataki has been trying hard for two years now to force his name into the 2012 mix.

And that's the problem: Republican leaders and activists have been hungry for new '12 options for a long time, but never once have they looked at Pataki and said, "Now there's our answer!"

Nor is there any reason to think they will if he jumps in. His long-standing support for abortion and gay rights is probably enough to doom him alone. When Rudy Giuliani won one delegate in 2008, it was the first time in 28 years that a pro-choice Republican candidate for president had even done that well.

Apparently, Pataki sees positioning himself as an anti-deficit crusader as a way around this. But while there are examples of past presidential candidates who have gained unexpected traction by playing up deficits (Paul Tsongas and Ross Perot), they were able to do so mainly because their opponents ignored or downplayed the issue. Pataki, by contrast, would simply be the ninth (or 10th, or however many there are) GOP candidate to claim that horrible, terrible deficits are threatening America's very existence.

But this is all analyzing the Pataki platform much too closely. The more basic reason why Republicans have tuned out his cries for attention is that he's simply not relevant anymore, and really hasn't been for a while. Sure, he ran one of the country's largest states for 12 years, but he wasn't even the most famous Republican from New York during that time -- Rudy was. Nor did he rack up any particularly notable achievements as governor, no innovative policy advances that captured the national media's interest or established him in conservative circles as the One To Watch. He came across as a thoroughly average, thoroughly boring governor. And now he comes across as a thoroughly average, thoroughly boring former governor whose name hasn't been on a ballot since 2002.

What this really amounts to is a sad story. Talk to those who know him and they will tell you that Pataki has long nursed presidential dreams, going back to his days at Yale in the 1960s. And there was a moment, a long time ago now, when it looked like he might actually have an opening to pursue those dreams. This was back in 1994, when -- with the invaluable (and, some claimed, unethical) assistance of then-Sen. Al D'Amato -- he grabbed the Republican nomination for governor of New York then upset Mario Cuomo in the fall.? The victory had very little to do with Pataki himself (D'Amato and the anti-Democratic tide of '94 did the job) but it nonetheless made him a hero to national Republicans.

But that was the high-water mark, and his 12-year run as governor didn't line up with any obvious opportunities to run for president. 1996 was too soon, so he settled for greasing the skids in the New York primary for Bob Dole, D'Amato's candidate. 2000 might have been a good year, but the GOP's governors all decided early to rally around one of their own, Texas' George W. Bush (Pataki's old Yale classmate) and Pataki merrily went along. 2004 was Bush's reelection year, so that was out too, and when he finally left Albany in 2006 and began making noises about a 2008 White House campaign, Pataki quickly discovered that he was overshadowed by Giuliani ... and everyone else. So he stayed out. Perhaps a different New York Republican governor with presidential ambitions would have found a way to create a national opening for himself in all that time, but that's just the point: That sort of attention-grabbing aggression isn't in Pataki's political DNA.

Even D'Amato, the man who made him governor all those years ago, now says it will be "difficult if not impossible" for Pataki to win the GOP?nomination. But it looks like he may try anyway. In a way, you can't blame him: He's 66 and knows this is probably his last chance. And Republicans will most likely be happy to give him a place on their stage and to let him live out his dream of running. But it will be because he asked them to do it -- not because they invited him.

Home maintenance and repair are processes that are very challenging to deal with and manage for any owner today. Many of the maintenance needs found on any property involve keeping the exterior of the home well maintained and manicured at all times to help provide an incredible first impression for the home. People contemplating this process for their yard should know the perks of landscape lighting San Antonio to ensure they make an effective decorating decision for their home.

Migraine Headaches ? Is Relief Without Drugs Possible ...

Natural treatment methods for migraine headaches are usually harmless and also cheaper than traditional pain medications. Sure, it?s possible you could experience a negative reaction or even increase your headache pain because of a natural treatment, but the odds are far less than with pain-relieving medications.

People are different from each other. A natural treatment that might relieve one person?s migraine headaches may not relieve someone else?s. But on the same measure, just because one migraine headache treatment does not work for one person does not mean it won?t work for you. There are many effective alternatives to taking medication when it comes to relieving migraine headaches. One of these alternative methods may be just what you have been looking for.

Chiropractic adjustments, or chiropractic manipulations, are a very popular natural treatment method for headache relief. Patients with migraine headaches have been visiting chiropractors for over 100 years, and with very good results. Studies have shown that over 80% of headache patients find relief with chiropractic care. Plus, chiropractic treatment has been shown to be extremely safe. Spinal problems do cause headaches and by correcting these spinal problems many headache sufferers find welcome relief.

Biofeedback is another form of treatment that is safe and can be effective in eliminating pain. Biofeedback is a training program designed to help a person develop the ability to control their autonomic (involuntary) nervous system. Functions that are normally automatic can be controlled voluntarily. This technique makes it possible for a person to control their own heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and of course, the relaxation of their tense muscles.

Stress can cause tension, which can lead to muscle tightness (muscle tension) and cause headaches. By relaxing these tense muscles, especially in the neck, it is possible to relieve the tension causing the migraine headaches. With biofeedback, once the technique is learned there is no longer any need for the biofeedback equipment. The patient with migraine headaches can now produce the desired effect at any. They can control certain bodily functions, such as muscle relaxation, which can help reduce and relieve their migraine headaches.

Most people are unaware that too much salt can cause headaches. And by simply lessening the salt intake headaches can sometimes be prevented.

Food allergies or sensitivities can also cause migraine headaches. Certain foods such as cheese, alcohol, monosodium glutamate (a food additive), nuts, beans, caffeine, chocolate and onions can cause migraines. Foods that cause headaches are called

Learn About Living Wills | The A2Z Articles Directory

Learn About Living Wills

Article by Gordon James

A living will (usually defined as making future decisions, preparing statements, or leaving instructions for the future)is a method of making sure your final desires are fulfilled when you are dead, your memorial service goes as you planned, and your beneficiaries handle your final affairs in the manner you approve of.

A living will is not exactly enforced according to the law in Britain, but the medical personnel attempt to go along with your requests, as much as the legal codes will let you.

The majority of people choose living wills to designate that they do not want special treatment to keep them living longer, while other people use living wills to make sure everything is done to hold onto life. Be aware of this, however, only living wills that deny treatment are actually bound by the law, while other wills stating that you want everything to be done to keep you living is basically just to let the doctors and nurses know that you will struggle for life, but it does not guarantee that you will have that privilege.

These papers are easy to fill out. You have to put down on paper what you desire, and put your signature on it when you are in your right mind. It makes sense to have an impartial witness who will not profit from your death, and also a physician or health care worker to verify that you are aware of what is going on. Your physician could be a witness. Be sure to put the date on the living will so people will know when it was written. Finally, the minimum age is eighteen for a living will to be considered legal.

In the living will you must be specific about what kind of medical treatments you want to have, which treatments you refuse, and make it very clear. If you don?t want to be brought back to life, then say it. If you don?t want to use antibiotics to save your life if you catch pneumonia, make sure it is understood. You can also go into detail about whether you want to try something new if the treatment is available, or if you don?t want to be nourished with a feeding tube, it is your decision. But, you can?t make a living will to say that you want to end your life by euthanasia or you want to stop eating and starve to death, because basic human rights are applicable.

With your living will, you can choose someone else to decide what to do about taking care of you, if it is needed. It makes sense to obtain a lasting power of attorney (LPA) to make this person in charge of your medical care, as part of your living will. This person should know about their position before you go into the hospital, if you can. Keep several copies and give one copy to the doctor or nurse to put in your patient folder when you go into the hospital or have a checkup, so you can be certain your papers are in the right place when you need it.

What Kind Of People Need A Living Will?

All people. Although the majority of people only consider making a living will when they get sick, or begin to show signs of dementia, anybody could end up in a predicament where the people they love are pressured to make a life or death decision. Your living will should be made during the time you buy life insurance, because this is how you can look out for your loved ones if the time comes when you are not able to talk to them and help them avoid making bad decisions.

Remember, also, you can make changes to your living will whenever you want to, on paper or by mouth by letting a medical worker know this. When you write your living will on paper it does not have to stay this way, it only gives you basic suggestions for what you what to be done and what you don?t want.

If you require further assistance in the area of wills and trusts I can recommend a solicitors in Wirral that you will find most helpful Hillyer McKeown.

Extreme Earthquake Reactions: Fear and Laughing in America (LiveScience.com)

Reactions ranged from fright to amusement Tuesday as a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit the East Coast, revealing post-9/11 fears as well as excitement surrounding a rare, and fortunately not deadly, event.

"Everyone calm down," Slate political correspondent John Dickerson wrote on Twitter. "If this is an earthquake on the east coast we're supposed to react ironically."

Many people did, propagating a wave of earthquake jokes on Twitter. Others were more alarmed.

"Two women were screaming," said Paige Furbush, an intern for Utah Senator Warren Hatch who was on her second day on the job Tuesday. "A few people thought it was a bomb, so the majority of people in the Capitol were definitely panicked."

That range of reactions isn't unexpected, said Josh Klapow, a clinical psychologist at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, who specializes in disaster preparedness. People bring their own anxieties to an unexpected event, and interpretation matters, Klapow told LiveScience.

"The environment and the event set the stage, but it's people's minds, their cognitions, their thoughts that fill in the gaps," he said. "So if you're in D.C. in the Senate, if you feel a large jolt and earthquakes are not common, a common perception would be, 'Oh, it's something else. It's a bomb.'"

Unexpected event

Many people reported an initial wave of shock and fear. Philadelphia resident Russ Bader said the shaking of his building reminded him of a "poltergeist attack."?

"I was one of the lucky people who felt the earthquake and was majorly freaked out," Bader told LiveScience, adding, "Who would have known that I would ever feel an earthquake in Philly?" [Read: Why Virginia Quake Shook Entire Coast]

"I was really scared," New Yorker Karthin Patel, who experienced the quake from 1 Madison Ave., told LiveScience. "But I've felt earthquakes before, but from the second floor. Here it's the eighth floor. We would have to take the elevator, that death trap."

In New York, the quake seemed to bring back bad memories of the 9/11 attacks. Allison Bethell, 28, who owns a real estate company in Philadelphia, felt the quake in a park in New York City.

"People came rushing out of the buildings," Bethell told LiveScience. "I wondered what was going on. People in the buildings were wondering what it was, if it was another terrorist attack."

West coasters were often more relaxed about the quake. Yana Price, a student at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, couldn't help but be amused at her friends' reactions to the quake on Facebook.

"See, I go to school in Pennsylvania, but originally I'm from California," Price told LiveScience.

Preparing for rare disasters

Noticeable earthquakes are rare along the East Coast, especially compared with seismically active California. But you don't have to study up on earthquakes to be ready for one, Klapow said.

"We've really moved to what's called an all-hazards approach," Klapow said. Instead of urging people to prepare for individual disasters, public health officials recommend that everyone make a few basic preparations, no matter the risks in their area.

Knowing an emergency evacuation route for your home and workplace, having an out-of-state contact who can be in touch with relatives and friends if the phones in your areas are down and keeping a three-day stash of emergency food, water and first aid supply on hand will help in any emergency, from disease outbreak to hurricane, Klapow said.

"What those kind of things do besides preparing you practically or logistically is that psychologically, it's a huge help," Klapow said. "Giving yourself that sense of control will actually go a long way in reducing your anxiety, as well as potentially saving your life."

Another winning week for CBS in the ratings (AP)

NEW YORK ? Summer TV doldrums continued for the audience last week, with only preseason football and a certain talent contest creating any stir among viewers.

NBC scored with its preseason faceoff between San Diego and Dallas. Drawing 10.7 million viewers, it was the week's most-watched broadcast, and ranked as the third highest-rated NFL preseason game in the past five years.

Right behind football were NBC's Tuesday and Wednesday airings of "America's Got Talent."

But CBS was on top overall in prime time for the week, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nielsen Co. Among CBS' high performers, three editions of "Big Brother" landed in the Top 10.

For the week, CBS averaged 6.0 million viewers (3.8 household rating, 7 share). In second place, NBC had 5.5 million (3.4 rating, 6 share), while Fox had 4.7 million (2.8 rating, 5 share) and ABC averaged 4.4 million viewers (2.7 rating, 5 share). ION Television averaged 1.1 million (0.7 rating, 1 share), and the CW had 800,000 (0.5 rating, 1 share).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with 3.5 million viewers (1.8 rating, 3 share), Telemundo had 1.0 million (0.5 rating, 1 share), TeleFutura had 390,000 (0.2 rating, 0 share), Azteca had 220,000 and Estrella 190,000 (both 0.1 rating, 0 share).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.6 million viewers (5.0 rating, 10 share). ABC's "World News" was second with 7.3 million (4.8 rating, 10 share) and the "CBS Evening News" had 5.6 million viewers (3.8 rating, 8 share).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Aug. 15-21, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: NFL Preseason: San Diego at Dallas, NBC, 10.68 million; "America's Got Talent" (Tuesday), NBC, 10.40 million; "America's Got Talent" (Wednesday), NBC, 9.74 million; "NCIS," CBS, 8.70 million; NFL Preseason: Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, Fox, 8.59 million; "Big Brother 13" (Sunday), CBS, 8.37 million; "Big Brother 13" (Wednesday), CBS, 8.14 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 7.90 million; "60 Minutes," CBS, 7.80 million; "Big Brother 13" (Thursday), CBS, 7.74 million.

How to Market and Sell more Commercial Property | Pm Telecom Council

Marketing and selling a large commercial property is a lot different from slapping a for sale sign up on a house in a crowded, residential neighborhood. While many of the principles regarding real estate sales will still hold true, the marketing needs an entirely different approach if the commercial property agent really wants to be successful and not just “one of the guys” … so to speak. Industrial and Commercial Real Estate sales are an entirely different ballgame and the individuals involved in the deals will often be much more complicated to deal with than the newlyweds anxious to purchase the first garage they come across with a house attached to it. Marketing is one of the most important aspects of commercial real estate sales. While marketing may be easy, marketing to the right people and moreover, actually getting the message to those people is where the commercial property marketing tactics can get a little bit tricky. One of the greatest places to start is within trade magazines. Even so, it is important to let technology run its course and to look a little bit deeper. Most of the print publications these days realize their deficiencies even if not all of their advertisers do. Once an ad is out in print, it is there to stay just the way it was put in. It also tends to go out to a lot more limited audience than may be preferred or needed to successfully sell a commercial property. Most of the major print publications these days also have online media outlets that are great for advertising commercial property. It is important to go the traditional route but it is also necessary to utilize as many venues as possible in order to get up to date, important information to all of the potential buyers of commercial real estate. Online advertising generally allows you to reach a wider, more directly targeted audience with current, constantly updated information regarding the commercial property for sale. The ability to transmit information quickly and accurately can seem like a moot point to some people involved in commercial real estate deals that often take months to close but rest assured, when the time comes that the data has to be there quickly, (generally at very awkward moments during board meetings or other venues where it is not easy to get away) a failure to deliver the information will blow the deal every time. One of the most powerful tools in the arsenal of a real estate sales person, for residential or office properties, remains good, old-fashioned networking. Now this should not be confused with reminding your in laws or your neighbors what you do while you are lounging around and enjoying a few adult beverages. When you are networking, you need to find ways to associate yourself with others who will be actively involved in transactions regarding industrial or commercial properties for lease or for sale. Networking like Marketing, must be focused and precise if it is to be effective. You can easily spend all day at any major public transportation hub and tell lots of people what you are doing but it is not very likely to yield any positive results. Rather, look for trade shows that feature industrial or commercial products, businesses and opportunities. Likewise, conventions where there will be major players from industrial and commercial businesses will allow you to make more contacts that are much more likely to generate productive sales leads. While advertising is always going to be an invaluable tool when it comes to any type of sales work, including industrial and commercial property sales, it is never going to offer anyone a complete package deal. It is up to the motivated commercial property agent to discover new, relevant venues to let people know who they are and what they do … and to let them know that that is exactly why YOU are the one to go to when it comes time to find a commercial property for lease or for sale.

(AP) ? An Ohio cheerleading coach scheduled to undergo organ donation surgery was confirmed dead Monday from injuries sustained earlier this month when a stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair.

Meagan Toothman, 24, was confirmed Monday afternoon as the seventh person to die from the Aug. 13 stage collapse, according to a statement from the Marion County coroner's office released by the Indiana State Police.

It wasn't immediately clear if she had undergone the surgery, which was set for Monday. Calls by The Associated Press to the coroner's office and police were not immediately returned late Monday night.

Toothman's family said earlier in a Web journal that organ donation surgery "will provide gifts of sight, health, and life to dozens who are in need." Doctors put Toothman into a coma Aug.15 to try to ease the bruising and swelling on her brain.

"Late last night it became apparent that our Meagan was no longer with us," the family wrote Monday. "The decision was made to allow to her to be at peace."

Authorities erroneously reported that she had died late Sunday, but Marion County coroner's office spokeswoman Marchele Hall said Toothman remained in a coma at the time. Toothman was the head cheerleading coach at Turpin High School in Cincinnati.

"The outpouring of love and hope ... was an inspiration to all of us to keep her fighting," her family said. "We hope that she will continue to touch more lives in the same way through her passing."

Strong winds toppled a stage onto a crowd of fans as they waited for country band Sugarland to perform. Three fans and a security guard died at the scene, while a fourth fan and a stagehand later died of their injuries. Some four dozen people were hurt, many seriously.

It was not known Monday how many of those injured in the stage collapse remained hospitalized. State police stopped providing updates on the injured last week and hospitals have not provided reports on the condition of those injured.

Roeland Polet, whose wife and two daughters had attended the concert with Toothman, told The Associated Press that Toothman's death would be yet another tragedy for their family.

His wife, Jill Polet, and their older daughter, Jaymie Polet, were both injured in the collapse and remain hospitalized but their younger daughter, Jordan, escaped injury.

"It's horrible. It is devastating for my family. For my daughter, she was like a big sister. They were extremely close," Polet said of his daughter Jaymie and Toothman.

He said both Jill and Jaymie, who are in separate hospitals in Indianapolis, are "in very rough shape." He said it's unclear when they will be released and both suffered multiple fractures.

Jaymie had been a cheerleader at Turpin High School and had planned to try out for cheerleader at Indiana University, where she's enrolled for this fall. Polet said IU officials came to the hospital Sunday with T-shirts and banners for her.

Real estate schools of thought

Everyone seems to be after real estate investments as that is regarded as one of the safest high return investments. There are various schools of thought on real estate investments. Lets explore two of the most common real estate schools of thought.

One real estate school of thought talks about doing a lot of analysis. This real estate school of thought advocates studying a lot of factors which are generally linked to economic indicators. This real estate school of thought evaluates the economic indicators in many different ways. It takes its cues from a number of financial indices and how they are expected to perform in the near future. This real estate school of thought evaluates various socio-economic indicators at all levels Global, national and local. This real estate school of thought evaluates inflation and things like value of money today and value of money next year etc. It uses all these evaluations in order to come up with predictions on how real estate industry is expected to fare in the next few years. So, this real estate school of thought tries to determine the buying power of people in order to determine the course of real estate prices. When it comes to evaluating the real estate trend with regards to a particular place (i.e. locally), this real estate school of thought takes into account various local factors like the unemployment rate, the industrial development in the region, the change in tax policies and any events that might affect the real estate prices in the area. It also takes into consideration the surrounding areas and the real estate trend in those areas. So, this real estate school of thought is really followed by arch real estate consultants/investors who know a lot about finance and put all that knowledge to use in determining the trends for real estate industry. However, that is just one real estate school of thought.

The other real estate school of thought doesnt consider those factors at all. According to this real estate school of thought, real estate is always lucrative at all times and at all places. This real estate school of thought advocates looking for great deals. Its this real estate school of thought that asks you to go to public auctions, look for distress sales and foreclosures, find motivated seller, rehab and sell, etc. So, this real estate school of thought focuses on getting the information about the best deals in town and taking advantage of them to make good profits.

So, those are the two real estate schools of thought and following either or both calls for time and effort (if you are to make any profits out of real estate investments).

Jerry Lewis: Saving lives through MDA was honor (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Jerry Lewis says his years of service to the Muscular Dystrophy Association helped make him a star.

Lewis said Saturday that he made his reputation in show business by saving lives. His remarks in Las Vegas came during his acceptance speech at the Nevada Broadcasters Association dinner, where he received a lifetime achievement award.

It was his first public appearance since he and the MDA parted ways earlier this month.

The 85-year-old says the recognition was as meaningful as ever, but he could not explain why.

Lewis hinted several times that he also could not explain why he is no longer the national chairman of the MDA after 45 years.

Lewis also will no longer host the group's annual Labor Day weekend telethon. MDA officials have not explained the separation.
