The best preventative measures involve a consistent program of both stretching and strengthening exercises. Increased flexibility will contribute greatly to the ability of the hamstring muscles to resist strains and injury. To follow are two very effective and very safe hamstring stretches.

Warming up correctly will also contribute greatly to reducing the likelihood of a hamstring injury, and don?t just stretch before you exercise. Make sure you stretch both before and after any physical activity. Dedicate time to your entire flexibility, this will not only help you avoid injury, it will also make you a better athlete.

If you do happen to suffer from a hamstring injury, it?s important that correct first aid principles are applied immediately. The RICER regime explains the correct treatment for all muscle strain injuries. RICER stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and then obtaining a Referral from a qualified sports doctor or physiotherapist. PHILADELPHIA ? Michael Vick went home with a broken hand and woke up with only a bad bruise.

Now that's a testament to the miracle of modern medicine. Well, not exactly.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said a CT scan Monday showed the star quarterback has a hand "contusion." Reid said X-rays taken during Philadelphia's 29-16 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday showed Vick may have a fracture.

"Today, he had a scan and it showed there was no break," Reid said. "It was a blood vessel sitting above the bone. That happens at times with X-rays. The blood vessel makes it look like it was a fracture. There is still a bunch of swelling. It is sensitive to the touch. The positive is there is not a fracture there."

It's uncertain if Vick, who throws left-handed, will play when the Eagles (1-2) host the San Francisco 49ers (2-1) next Sunday.

"We will see how he does over the next couple of days," Reid said. "We have to get the swelling where it is manageable and he feels comfortable. It's about the same right now, and it's not to say that he can't play with the swelling, it's just got to be where he can bend his hand where he can work with it."

Vick was injured on a hit from Chris Canty after completing a 23-yard pass to Jeremy Maclin in the third quarter. He finished off the series and led the Eagles to a go-ahead field goal.

Vick left for X-rays, but returned without missing a play. He then left the game for good after another series. Mike Kafka replaced him and threw two interceptions.

Reid wouldn't say whether Kafka or Vince Young would start if Vick can't play against the 49ers.

"He always wants to play, that's how he is," Reid said of Vick. "He's a competitive guy."

The hit from Canty didn't sit well with Vick. He blasted officials for not calling a roughing-the-passer penalty, and said he wants to be treated like other quarterbacks.

Vick backtracked a day later, however.

"I was kind of out of character and being too candid in that aspect," he said Monday. "Ultimately, I respect the referees and their decision to make calls, and you won't hear me complain about it no more."

Still, Reid is concerned about his franchise player.

"His best interest is always in my mind, when he's on the football field, in particular," Reid said. "I know he's a marked man. I think it's important that we all keep a close eye on him."

Canty, of course, disagreed with Vick's view on the hit.

"No, I didn't think there was anything wrong with the hit when it took place," he said. "I didn't think there was anything wrong with the hit after looking at it again today. You know, it's unfortunate that he got injured. We're not out there trying to injury anyone. We're all competitors. We're competing at the highest level. It is unfortunate for him and unfortunate for their football team. We're all competing. We're all competitors. We have to go out and play hard."

Reid and several Eagles players expressed concerns last year over late hits that weren't called on Vick.

Asked whether he would call the league to complain, Reid said: "We'll see."

Better protection from the offensive line would certainly help Vick, too.

"There are a bunch of things that we can do and we can say other people need to do and all that," Reid said. "But we're going to keep working on things on our end, and I know people will keep working on things on their end."

Vick started against the Giants despite suffering a concussion in the second half of a loss at Atlanta just a week earlier. He seemed out of rhythm early, but made some nice throws before getting hurt again.

In other injury news, Maclin's hamstring strain also is better than it appeared at first.

"Initially, we thought it was more significant than that," Reid said. "It is tender right now. The MRI came back and it wasn't a negative thing there."

Wideout Riley Cooper is day-to-day with a concussion, and cornerback Brandon Hughes has a hamstring strain. Defensive ends Juqua Parker (high ankle sprain) and Darryl Tapp (pectoral strain) didn't play Sunday.

Pakistan condemns US comments about spy agency (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan lashed out at the U.S. for accusing the country's most powerful intelligence agency of supporting extremist attacks against American targets in Afghanistan ? the most serious allegations against Islamabad since the beginning of the Afghan war.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar dismissed the claims as mere allegations. She warned the U.S. that it risked losing Pakistan as an ally and could not afford to alienate the Pakistani government or its people.

"If they are choosing to do so, it will be at their own cost," Khar told Geo TV on Thursday from New York City, where she is attending a U.N. General Assembly meeting. "Anything which is said about an ally, about a partner publicly to recriminate it, to humiliate it is not acceptable."

Khar's comments were first aired in Pakistan on Friday.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani responded to the U.S. criticism by saying Washington was in a tough spot.

"They can't live with us. They can't live without us," Gilani told reporters Friday in the southern city of Karachi. "So, I would say to them that if they can't live without us, they should increase contacts with us to remove misunderstandings."

The Pakistani officials were responding to congressional testimony by the top U.S. military officer about Pakistan.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, accused Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency Thursday of supporting the Haqqani insurgent network in planning and executing the assault on the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan last week and a truck bomb that wounded 77 American soldiers days earlier.

He also said the U.S. had credible information that Haqqani extremists, with help from the ISI, were responsible for the June 28 attack on the Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul and other small but effective assaults.

The Haqqani insurgent network is widely believed to be based in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area along the Afghan border. The group has historical ties to Pakistani intelligence, dating back to the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s. The U.S. military has said the Haqqani network, which has ties to both al-Qaida and the Taliban, poses the greatest threat to American troops in Afghanistan.

Mullen insisted that the Haqqani insurgent network "acts as a veritable arm" of the ISI, undermining the uneasy U.S.-Pakistan relationship forged in the terror fight and endangering American troops in the almost 10-year-old war in Afghanistan.

Pakistan is "exporting violence" and threatening any success in Afghanistan, Mullen told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"In choosing to use violent extremism as an instrument of policy, the government of Pakistan, and most especially the Pakistani army and ISI, jeopardizes not only the prospect of our strategic partnership but Pakistan's opportunity to be a respected nation with legitimate regional influence," Mullen said. "They may believe that by using these proxies, they are hedging their bets or redressing what they feel is an imbalance in regional power. But in reality, they have already lost that bet."

Mullen's harsh words marked the first time an American official had tied Pakistan's intelligence agency directly to the attacks and signaled a significant shift in the U.S. approach to Islamabad. In the past, U.S. criticism of Pakistan largely had been relayed in private conversations with the countries' leaders while American officials publicly offered encouraging words for Islamabad's participation in the terror fight.

Mullen did not provide specific evidence backing up his accusations or indicate what the U.S. would do if Pakistan refuses to cut ties to the Haqqani network. The U.S. has repeatedly demanded that Pakistan attack the insurgents and prevent them from using the country's territory.

Pakistan has denied ties to the group in the past and has said it cannot attack them because its troops are stretched too thin fighting other militants in the country's semiautonomous tribal region. Many analysts believe, however, that Pakistan wants to remain on good terms with the militants because they could be useful allies in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw.

Mullen's comments carry particular weight since the Joint Chiefs chairman has nurtured ties with the Pakistanis during his tenure, meeting with officials more than two dozen times. His congressional testimony was his last before he retires next week.

Mullen reaffirmed his support for continued U.S. engagement with the nuclear-armed Pakistan and warned of the consequences if the relationship should break down. But his comments could make that engagement harder and continue a recent downward trend in ties between the two countries.

The relationship took one of its hardest hits when U.S. commandos sneaked into Pakistan on May 2 and killed al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden in a garrison town not far from Islamabad.

The covert raid outraged the Pakistani government because it was not told about it beforehand, while bin Laden's presence in Abbottabad raised further suspicions among U.S. officials about the country's duplicity in the anti-terror fight.

The U.S. government?s power to force tobacco companies to put new graphic warning images on cigarette packages was questioned Wednesday by a federal judge.

Tobacco companies have filed a lawsuit to block the Food and Drug Administration requirement that would take effect in a year.

In Wednesday?s two-hour hearing, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon grilled a justice department lawyer about whether the new graphic warning images simply relay facts of the health risks of smoking or cross the line into advocacy. That would be a crucial distinction in a case over free speech, the Associated Press reported.

If Leon decides the new images do amount to advocacy, it would improve the chances that the tobacco companies? would be able to stop the new regulation. The judge said he hopes to issue a ruling by the end of October.

The recent suicide of a gay Buffalo, N.Y. teen who was the victim of bullying coincides with a national summit on bullying prevention.

Jamey Rodemeyer, 14, killed himself on the weekend after posting an online farewell. The student at Williamsville North High School had been the target of cyberbullies for the past year, ABC News reported.

The second annual Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention Summit is being held today in Washington, D.C. and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Speakers at the conference include parents of another gay teen who killed himself after suffering relentless bullying.

Rodemeyer?s suicide also marks a sad start to LGBT History Month in October.

?Jamey?s suicide is a tragic reminder of the vulnerability of gay teens,? Malcolm Lazin, founder and executive director of the Equality Forum, which focuses on LGBT civil rights and education, told ABC News.

?They are bullied and marginalized,? he said. ?While some may say that Jamey took his life, it is unrelenting homophobia that murdered him.?

Research Casts Doubt on ?Longevity Protein?

A new study challenges the theory that proteins called sirtuins can prolong life.

Previous research has suggested that elevated levels of sirtuins could extend life by up to 50 percent, but this new study found no such evidence, Agence France-Presse reported.

?We have re-examined the key experiments linking sirtuin with longevity in animals and none seem to stand up to close scrutiny,? study leader David Gem, of the Institute of Healthy Aging at University College London, said in news release. ?Sirtuins, far from being a key to longevity, appear to have nothing to do with extending life.?

The study appears in the journal Nature.

Dangerous Polio Strain Spreads to China

A ?dangerous strain? of polio has spread from Pakistan to China, the World Health Organization says.

A WHO spokesman explained that the wild poliovirus type 1 is more dangerous than type 3 because it spreads more easily and is more likely to cause paralysis, the Associated Press reported.

In the past two months, seven cases of the WPV1 strain have been confirmed in China?s Xinjiang province, which borders Pakistan.

The WHO says travelers to Pakistan need to be vaccinated against polio and that countries need to boost their surveillance for the WPV1 strain, the AP reported.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is currently no danger of contracting the strain of polio in the United States, although travelers to foreign countries where it is endemic do need to be cautious. The CDC advises that travelers talk to their doctors about the risks before they depart.

Women whose first pregnancy ended in infant death are significantly more likely to have a subsequent stillbirth finds new research published today (21 September) in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Black women experienced the highest rates of stillbirth in subsequent pregnancy, the study by US researchers from the University of South Florida and the University of Rochester found.

Infant mortality accounts for an estimated 5.75 million deaths annually worldwide and it is estimated there are 3.2 to 3.3 million stillbirths annually worldwide.

This new study looked at 320,350 women who had two singleton pregnancies between 1989 and 2005. Of these, 2,483 women (0.78%) had experienced infant death in the first pregnancy, while the remaining 317,867 women had an infant in their first pregnancy who survived the first year of life.

Within the study population, 1,347 cases of stillbirth occurred during the second pregnancy, representing a stillbirth rate of 4.2 per 1,000.

Mothers with previous infant death (defined as death of a child within the first year of life) were compared to those whose infant survived their first year.

Adjusted hazard ratios (AHR) were generated to assess the association between infant mortality in the first pregnancy and stillbirth in the second pregnancy.

The study found that overall women with prior infant death were three times as likely to experience stillbirth in their subsequent pregnancy (AHR=2.91).

White women with previous infant death were nearly twice as likely to experience subsequent stillbirth, compared to white women with prior infant survival (AHR=1.96). Black women with previous infant death were more than four times as likely to experience subsequent stillbirth, compared to their black counterparts (AHR=4.28).

The risk of stillbirth among women with and without a history of infant death, neonatal death, and post-neonatal death by race was also reviewed and the researchers found that black women had the highest rates of stillbirth in subsequent pregnancy. Looking specifically at neonatal death, black women were more than nine times as likely to experience stillbirth as white women (AHR=9.46).

The study also found that women with infant death in the first pregnancy were more likely to be black, obese, and smoke during pregnancy.

When comparing birth weight of infants associated with the second pregnancy, infants born to mothers with prior infant death were, on average, 293 grams smaller than those born to mothers whose previous infant survived their first year of life.

In addition, pregnancy complications were almost twice as frequent among mothers who experienced infant death during their first pregnancy, as compared to those whose infants survived their first year of life (10.91% versus 6.66%).

Dr Hamisu Salihu, Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, University of South Florida, College of Public Health and principal investigator said:

"Our findings show that there are large disparities in infant mortality rates between white and black women and highlight the need for improved public health efforts to reduce infant mortality.

"It is important that clinicians note the potential risk for subsequent stillbirth following infant mortality when they speak with patients in the period preceding their next pregnancy."

Professor Philip Steer, BJOG Editor-in-Chief said:

"Stillbirth and infant death are a terrible loss and traumatic for any mother and family. Women with a previous infant death need additional support and advice concerning any subsequent pregnancies.

"Obesity and smoking in pregnancy are known risk factors for stillbirth and advice needs to be centred on pre-conception health so a woman can be as healthy as possible before, during and after pregnancy."
