Dymocks announces game-changing publishing ... - Writing Bar

Today at the Melbourne Writer?s Festival, Dymocks, Australia?s largest bookseller, announced the upcoming launch of D Publishing, a new web-based book publishing service.

This is a game-changer in the Australian publishing landscape. For a long time, I?ve wondered why Dymocks doesn?t have a publishing arm. After all, they have the distribution (stores across Australia) and they have the customers (hundreds of thousands of people on their Booklovers database).

Now, they are not beholden to what publishers decide is worthy to be published. This is good news for some writers. With many mainstream publishers decreasing the number of titles they release each month, there are many writers who are worthy of publication ? but, for whatever reason, their work doesn?t get to see the light of day.

I hear many stories from established writers whose publishers have refused to take on their next book. There are various factors at play, not least being the economy. In addition, there are publishers who are less willing to take risks unless they know a book is going to be a hit.

So where does a frustrated writer go if they have a story to tell or a message to get out to the world?

D Publishing from Dymocks is offering a solution. It will be available from October to provide an end-to-end publishing service. Basically it makes self-publishing easy.

According to Dymocks, it will ?enable authors to take control of the professional creation, publishing and distribution of both printed books and eBooks?.

More information directly from Dymocks:

Dymocks Chief Executive Officer, Don Grover says the new publishing service, allowing Australian writers and authors to create and publish books, is a logical extension for the business.

?We believe that D Publishing has the potential to significantly support and grow the book industry in Australia by providing more opportunities for Australian authors to create, publish, and sell their books,? said Mr Grover speaking from the Melbourne Writer?s Festival.

?Unlike the traditional publishing model this service is driven by the author. If you are thinking about publishing your first, or one of many books, you should think of D Publishing.

?D Publishing will be an opportunity for all budding Australian authors to see their works in published form and available for purchase online, while a selection of titles may also be available in Dymocks stores across Australia.?

From October 2011, budding authors and publishers can upload their draft manuscript to the service and proceed to produce and publish their book with D Publishing.

This is great news for self-publishers, particular writers of non-fiction or authors of business books. Why? Well, authors of business books of often business owners. And they have the entrepreneurial skills and experience to turn into opportunity to a truly viable revenue stream.
